Is Sephora's Bestselling Lip Gloss Really Worth The Hype?

YSL vinyl lip cream

I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of lip gloss; I’m a matte girl at heart! But of course, I had to try the number one bestselling lip product at Sephora… The Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream Lip Stain. Not only was the name slightly intimidating, but with a promise of so many effects, I was intrigued by the formula: it’s called a cream, but it has an intense gloss finish AND a staining property for longer wear. At first glance, it’s super sexy, and when you order it via the YSL website, you can get it with complimentary engraving on the lid – LOVE!

What it is: A comfortable liquid lip cream with high-coverage and an intense shine finish in 12 bold shades.

What it does: The creamy formula gives 10-hour wear while the diamond-shaped applicator is designed to help contour and line lips for effortless and smooth application.

What we liked: The gloss is SO gorgeous and I love the consistency – it’s thick but not sticky, and my lips didn’t feel dry afterward. It’s also very richly pigmented but not too opaque, which gives it a really beautiful finish. The thing I actually liked the most was that throughout the day the color lasted really well, but it did it in a sexy way – it didn’t stain them like most lip stains do, it gave them a beautiful flush instead. The color range is really beautiful too, but I think this is a collection for people who like bright lips, and as I’m more of a nude girl, it’s not something I would wear all the time. That said, if I did want to go for a bright red, pink, or orange, I would definitely use one of these!

What we didn’t like: Although the shape of the applicator is designed to help contour your lips, I felt it didn’t work that well with the formula. I actually found that the applicator made it hard to define the cupid’s bow and get the product into the corners. If you just want to apply it all over, it might work well for you, but I would definitely recommend using a lip liner beforehand so that creating shape and definition is easier.
