Benefit's Industrial Strength Concealer – Will It Show Blemishes Who's Boss?
Ever since I became obsessed with makeup, Benefit Cosmetics has been killing it with cute and quirky packaging. And it’s not just the design I’m obsessed with; their formulas are nearly always on-point too – they’re like the girl-next-door of beauty brands, cute but accessible. Benefit’s Boi-ing concealer has fast become a cult product and a consistent bestseller for the brand, so when they decided to give it a makeover, I was keen to see how they would reinvent it – I’m obsessing over their new metallic packaging look. Not only did Benefit repackage the original Boi-ing, but they also gave it some sisters too; three other siblings that promise to target and conceal in different ways. Would the Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer stand up to its famous past?
What it is: A full-coverage creamy matte concealer designed to stay all day. It comes in three shades: 01 – light, 02 – light-medium, 03 – medium.
What it does: The heavy-duty formula is designed to cover dark circles, blemishes, and discoloration. It can be used with a concealer brush to accurately give full-coverage to blemishes, or you can dab it under your eyes with your fingertip to hide dark circles.
What we liked: I love the new packaging, and I found the texture light but highly pigmented, and when I applied it with a small dense brush, it gradually buffed out with some stippling (I used the Kat Von D concealer brush). I chose shade 02 – light-medium, but the shade was very peachy, whereas I’m more yellow-toned, so this wasn’t ideal for use on all areas of my face.
What we didn’t like: I was never a regular user of Boi-ing before, but I did like the formula. I feel like this formula is much oilier than before, and it has quite a greasy texture (there was actually a thin layer of oil on top of the product when I bought it). Although I found it worked well on my skin before I applied foundation, when I tried to use it after my foundation, it didn’t seep into the makeup, it just sat on top of my skin. It’s also designed to be ‘industrial strength, ’ but by the time I had blended it to look natural, it wasn’t full coverage. I also think the collection lacks diversity: there are so many different skin tones and varying undertones within every skin tone, so offering just three shades is really not enough.
This might work well for you if you only need light coverage of minor dark circles, but for me, it’s not a product I would reach for again. I also think in today’s world, there needs to be a better shade offering (the deeper end of the shade spectrum is hugely lacking), particularly as this is a product that has been reworked. It’s a massively popular formula, so I recommend you try it in-store first.
