This is the most effective plant for treating acne, it’s full of antioxidants and is naturally astringent, which means it helps to draw out excess dirt, oil, and bacteria from the pores. You’ll spot it in tons of drugstore face washes, moisturizing gels, and spot sticks. You can use witch hazel in your beauty routine as a toner every day to keep your skin clear. This version by Thayers with Aloe Vera and soothing rose petals, $10.95 is a cult favorite, just be sure to moisturize after. For targeted pimple destruction, try the Boots Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Spot Wand, $6, which has a day and a night formula for 24-hour control.
Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion
A fav among celebs, this treatment is the ultimate acne-ass kicker and will take down spots overnight! The solution contains calamine lotion, which helps to reduce redness and swelling, and salicylic acid that penetrates deep into pores, exfoliating dead skin cells, and reducing sebum production. It also contains sulfur and zinc oxide, which further help to draw out impurities. Check out our full review of it here.
Salicylic acid is without a doubt the most effective pore cleaning acid, and is able to get deeper into the pores due to its unique molecular structure. When it penetrates your pores, it effectively unglues the sebum and dead skin cells that are stuck there, and dissolves blackheads. It also exfoliates the top layer of your skin preventing future breakouts. It’s most effective for treating blackheads and whiteheads and should only be used on areas that get particularly oily or directly on pimples, or it could be over-drying. We like Clinique’s Anti-Blemish Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel, $18, which works to shrink blemishes and prevent them popping up. We also love The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Solution, $8.40, which can also be applied directly to acne or all over.
