We’ve all been there – you pucker up to kiss bae and catch yourself licking your lips right before, trying to impart some form of moisture to a chapped situation. Not only is this less than sexy (ahem, ideal), it’s also a lost cause because that’ll only make them dry again in seconds.
So why do we get chapped lips and what’s the best way to deal? We turned to the lip expert and creator of the first-ever Lip Scrub, Sara Happ for the answers. “Extreme dryness and cracking can be caused by harsh weather, travel, and more, and our lips are the only part of our body lacking oil glands, so they really can’t help themselves,” she explains. “They are going to dry out if you don’t topically hydrate them.”

DIY Lip Scrub:
“Sugar and cinnamon work as effective, yet gentle, exfoliants to achieve smooth, kissable lips. Plus, cinnamon is also a great lip plumper, so you’ll get a little extra pout action after use – perfect for a Valentine’s Day date!” – Gabriel De Santino, makeup artist and founder of Gabriel Cosmetics.
- 1/2 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon powder
- 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
- Combine all ingredients in a small resealable container (like a makeup sample jar) since you’ll have enough for a couple of uses.
- Mix well, then apply a dime-size amount of the scrub to your lips in a circular motion to slough off dead skin.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and follow with your favorite lip balm.
