British glamour girl Charlotte Tilbury is a legend in the beauty world. After a long-running stint as one of the most requested makeup artists backstage during Fashion Month, Tilbury successfully launched her own skincare and makeup line, which has since garnered some of the top awards in the biz and continues to expand. She’s also known for working with the most famous faces in Hollywood (ahem, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively, and every supermodel on the planet), and she just led the team – and the looks – at the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. So if there’s anyone to teach us a thing or two about makeup and all of its magical possibilities, it’s her. She shared with us her six top tips for getting flawless skin and everything else a makeup lover needs to know about perfect makeup – take notes!

1. How to Do the ‘Tilbury Tap’

My ‘Tilbury Tap’ massage technique is my backstage beauty secret, which I have used since the very beginning of my career. To create a gorgeous, glowing, complexion before I start makeup, I always use my Charlotte’s Magic Cream, $29-255. This instant turnaround cream instantly floods the skin with moisture and is full of oils and actives that feed the skin including hyaluronic acid and peptides for a plump-effect, vitamin C and E that brighten and soothe the skin, and frangipani and aloe vera.

When I apply Magic Cream, I use my famous ‘Tilbury Tap’ massage technique to wake up the complexion. I start by working the fingers over the cheekbones like angel wings, then tap in across the forehead, chin, and nose using a pitter-patter motion. Massage is known to stimulate lymphatic drainage and boost micro-circulation as well.

2. Mastering a Glowing Complexion

For a red carpet glow like no other, try my Hollywood Flawless Filter, $44, which the GORGEOUS Huda called one of her favorite complexion discoveries of the year. A must-have in everyone’s makeup bag, I’ve used this on so many of my celebrity friends to give them a gorgeous, flawless filter before all the cameras on the red carpet. It’s just like a magic-tech filter on social media. And with my unique ‘Beneath it, Blend it, Boost it, Bling it’ application method, everyone can choose their own level of glow filter. Just apply using the magic wand one of these ways:

  • BENEATH IT: Wear it all over the face to prime the skin underneath your foundation to add a subtle glow and polish.
  • BLEND IT: Blend it with your personal shade of concealer or foundation on the back of your hand to amplify your Hollywood glow.
  • BOOST IT: Dot it along tops of the cheekbones, down the nose, above the cupid’s bow or anywhere to glow like a Hollywood star!
  • BLING IT: Go mega-watt and wear it at full volume, reducing the appearance of any imperfections with my Magic Away: Liquid Concealer, $32, for a fresh, glossy, all-over-glow.

3. Achieving the Ultimate Smokey Eye

Everyone knows me as the queen of the smokey eye, and I always say ‘smokey eye ‘til I die’ – it’s my go-to look for every occasion! The smokey eye has been every supermodel, screen siren, and starlet’s secret weapon because it can morph the appearance of the shape of your eyes, make them look bigger and more seductive.

To create a mesmerizing Dolce Vita-inspired look using my Luxury Palette, $53, start by using the PRIME shade and wash it over the eyelids back and forth like a windshield wiper, right up to the brow bone with a soft blending brush. This instantly brightens the appearance of the eyes. Next, follow with the slightly darker ENHANCE shade, with the same wiper motion, but this time focus on smoking the shade into the crease of the eye socket. To create more definition, apply the SMOKE shade (a deeper, rich, reddy-brown shade), using a smudger brush and run this shadow along the lash line. No smokey eye would be complete without a POP of molten sparkle pressed onto the lid and this POP shade is so finely milled and emollient-rich, it makes the eyes glisten in an instant!

4. Perfecting the Art of Skin Gilding

My latest trend that I know everyone is going to love is skin gilding! It’s no longer just about highlighting and my gorgeous trio chest, Bar of Gold Highlighter Palette, $58, is the ultimate skin gilding palette. I recommend using it on your cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, inner corners of the eyes, décolletage, arms, and even legs. It instantly lifts dull-looking skin for a natural golden glow and my top tip for the definitive gilded look is to dip your brush into a little bit of water before applying. The smooth, creamy formula glides across the skin like a liquid highlight, but sets like a powder, and captures light beautifully.

5. Painting a Flawless Red Lip

I know you all love a fabulous bold lip, and nothing says gorgeous glamour like a perfectly painted red lip! I believe that every woman can find “the one” when it comes to the perfect red lipstick shade – it’s just about finding out what suits you. As a general guide, more olive skin (or those with darker skin tones) look best in blue-toned bright berry or red shades like my Matte Revolution in Red Carpet Red, $34. While orangey reds like my Hot Lips in Tell Laura, $34, suit more pale skin tones.

When it comes to creating a perfect red lip, a lip liner really is our best friend. With my Lip Cheat, $22, you can create the effect of fuller, wider-looking lips with a flawless finish. The wax and oil-rich formula work beautifully as a stencil, ensuring your lip color lasts and when you apply, look in the mirror and smile, tightening the skin on the lips to see exactly where to apply the pencil. Starting on the outer corners, trace the liner just outside the natural lip line. This will help cheat a fuller pout, create symmetry to the lips, and help to stop the lipstick bleeding, without looking unnatural. For long-lasting power, you can also use a lip liner as a stencil all over the lips.

6. Setting Your Look

Once your makeup look is complete, it’s important to finish it off with a finely milled powder to lock in your makeup effortlessly and keep everything from slipping. It also removes any unwanted shine for any pictures. My Airbrush Flawless Finish, $45, powder will blur away the appearance of lines or imperfections to softly mattify and keep everything in place – it’s like the highest-thread count cashmere for your skin. It’s also enriched with rose wax and almond oil so it won’t sit heavy on the skin. When I apply, I use a soft sculpting brush and apply the powder on the T-zone, down the nose, on the chin, and across the forehead, but always keep the cheekbones free of powder so that they remain dewy and catch the light.
