If you had told us a year ago that we’d be trading in our fave nail trend – jelly nails – for cow print nails, we wouldn’t have believed you. No way… have you seen how cute jelly nails are? But when Kendall and Ariana drew our attention to how cute the trend really is, we had to reconsider. If you haven’t seen the it-girl mani-pedi, it’s exactly what you’d expect; white nails with cow patch-shaped speckles. Although we’re thinking of renaming the trend Dalmatian nails because, well, dogs are a lot cuter than cows. Here’s everything you need to know:

In a recent interview with Allure, Kendall was asked what nail trend she was planning to get at her next appointment, she coyly said “So there’s one that’s like cow print. I know that sounds really weird but it’s actually really cool. So, we’ll see if that happens any time soon.” Naturally, the beauty world caught on and we began to see cow print nails all over our IG feed. As soon as Ari donned cow patch nails, everyone went wild, and when Kendall finally committed, it became an official trend.

How to get the trend

Step 1: File and buff your nail to your desired shape (find what nail shape flatters your hand, here).

Step 2: Apply a base coat using a clear polish like the Smith & Cult Basis of Everything Base Coat, $18, to ensure your nails are protected and your mani lasts as long as possible.

Step 3: Apply a white base color. For the perfect brush technique, celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann (who works with Gisele, Dakota Fanning, Karlie Kloss, and Lupita Nyong’o ) says to “Only apply three strokes,” she explains. “One down the center and one on each side, and if you need more, you’re doing it wrong.” Too-thick polish can lead to clumps and messes, which are never cute. Repeat the base coat twice.

Step 4: Coat a toothpick with black nail polish and draw small speckles onto your nail.

Step 5: The key to keeping your moo’ing mani looking fresh is to apply a top coat every few days to mitigate chipping. The Instant Gel Effect Top Coat, $12, is ideal as it’s shiny and will help your mani withstand the test of time.

If you love the trend but CBA to do it yourself, grab some cow print nail stickers on Etsy, $4.

Okay so here’s some serious inspo…
