Holo makeup is all about capturing light and depth to showcase a spectrum of rainbow hues and mesmerizing color shifts. Lizzo recently said, “Yes, girl!” to the trend via some holo nails and lips, and even glazed donut queen Hailey Bieber went full glitz a la a sheer holographic lid she paired with a pastel rainbow winged eyeliner. They aren’t the only ones either…

Talk about fierce.

Feeling inspired to dabble in the realm of holo? We’re sharing our best pro tips for making holographic eye makeup work for you, then sounding off on our favorite holographic eye gels, glitters, and shadows. Get ready to GLEAM.

How to Nail Holograph Makeup Looks

We don’t believe in hard rules, but there are a few ways you can get the most out of your holographic eye makeup.

Blot Oil

via Giphy

Any product with glitter tends to slip, slide, and fall when placed on top of oily skin, so blot away oil before grabbing your shadow brush. Jenny Patinkin’s Blotter Baby Mattifying Roller, $22, is the perfect size for eyelids, and you can reuse it over and over again.

Prime Your Lids

An eyelid primer is always a good call, but it’s especially important when applying holographic makeup and/or glitter. This allows the product to go on more smoothly, helps prevent fallout, and keeps things in place. The Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $25, always keeps our look in place.

Don’t Overload Your Lids

Layering too many eyeshadow products on top of each other can lead to fallout. Fallout can also occur when layering different formula types on top of each other, so keep it simple.

Use The Right Eyeshadow Brush

You’ll need a different eyeshadow brush for different holographic eye makeup formulas that come in tubs or pressed powder form. For example, the Huda Beauty Fender Blender Eyeshadow Brush, $15, is intended for creamy, metallic, shimmery, and glitter eyeshadows. Not only does the petite sponge and silicone tips pick up the perfect amount of product, but it also promises precise application.

Set Makeup in Place

Once you’ve finished your holographic eye makeup look, take a sec to set everything in place. This 10-second step can help your makeup last way longer. You can’t go wrong with Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, $33.
