Remember the term “spider lashes” that referred to long clumpy lashes? Back in 2016, it wasn’t really a compliment and was more the kind of look you tried to avoid. Well, we’ve got some new beauty tea for y’all: the look is back, and it’s been reinvented, tweaked, and elevated, all inspired by the beautiful world of manga. Introducing manga lashes (also known as manhua lashes) which, BTW, has garnered over 40 million views on TikTok and counting. Here’s the DL:

The hype: #MangaLashes blew up the minute TikTokers got their hands on the tutorial. It’s currently at 40 million views and has beauty lovers, TikTok fanatics, and anime STANS snipping at their falsies.

The 411: “Manga” is the name for Japanese comic books and graphic novels, and their characters typically have razor-sharp, long lashes that TikTok now refers to as manga lashes. The look, first known as manhua lashes, became popular on a Chinese social media app called Xiaohongshu. It was then popularized on TikTok as manga lashes, with the help of Sacheu Beauty Founder, Sarah Cheung (her manga lash video above). Ever since, TikTokers and MUAs have been recreating the look with falsies and mascara.

Spider VS. Manga Lashes: We know, we know – the similarity to spider lashes is uncanny. While spider lashes (something Kim K’s currently playing with, btw) use a heavy all-over coating of mascara on your lashes, manga lashes are more scattered and less voluminous than spider lashes, and TikTokers are placing them in a way to enhance their natural eye shape.

How to get manga lashes with falsies: If you can find the right lash strip, this is the easiest way to cheat the look. Our Classic False Lash – Claudia #6, $18, understands the long, wispy lash assignment making them perfect for this look. In general, just make sure you buy lashes longer than your natural lash.

Step 1: Cut the strip into itty bitty sections (approx five to seven pieces) using the knots on the lash band as a point of reference. Separate the individual falsies by length and save the longest bits for your outer corners. Alternatively, let us do the hard work for you and try our Classic False Lash – Alyssa #2, $18, which is a set of individual falsies that are ready to apply – no cleaning up here!manga false lashes

Step 2: Apply mascara over your natural lashes as normal.

Step 3: Using a pair of tweezers, place each lash cluster as close to your lash line as possible. Once again, apply the shorter clusters to the inner corner and gradually lengthen the lash towards the outer corner.

Step 4: Attach the smallest clusters to your bottom lashline, spacing them apart as you previously did.

If you’re looking for a serious shortcut, there are some lashes already designed to fit the manga brief, like the FANXITON Manga Lashes, $8. Just apply as you would any strip lash.

How to get manga lashes with mascara: If you want a more natural manga lash, use our LEGIT LASHES Double-Ended Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara, $29, to nail the look. This hack is actually perfect for your lower lashes if you CBA to apply falsies.

Step 1: Apply your mascara as usual.

Step 2: Lightly coat the ends of your tweezers with mascara, then pinch together a small section of your natural lashes.

Our thoughts: We think manga (manhua) lashes are a seriously gorg new style. They look so cute and wispy, plus they’re beyond versatile. Whether you use them to elevate a no-makeup makeup look or pair them with graphic liner, it’s a certified lewk. On the other hand, this does take some time and patience to master as it can be pretty fiddly, so give yourself plenty of time to try it out.

The bottom line: Practice makes perfect. While the application process can be lengthy, it adds a real vibe to your lash look.
