Say Goodbye To These 2021 Beauty Trends #RIP

2021 has seen some iconic trends bloom and re-emerge but today we’re talking about the trends soon to (if they haven’t already) disappear into the abyss. These trends will fast become ‘so last year,’ and while we’ll fondly remember some, others we’ll happily say buh-bye to – unrealistic beauty standards, we’re looking at you! So without further ado, help us say goodbye to these 2021 beauty trends. #RIP.

BYE-BYE Lion Brows, HELLO Natural, Sculpted Arches

If there’s one topic that we’ll never tire of discussing, it’s brow trends. 2021 was all about the lion brow, AKA brushed up or laminated brows that almost dominated the face. The brows were overgrown, stood tall, and were slicked sturdily into place. Don’t get us wrong, we’ve been big fans of this look, and while we still love it, we’re noticing a shift back to a more-tamed, and slightly more natural-looking brow. Let’s be real, those lion brows weren’t necessarily easy to achieve – especially if you were a 90s child, IYKYK. For 2022, we foresee a little less stiffness and a more natural definition to our arches.

Before you panic, we’re not referring to those skimpy brows that threatened to make a comeback in 2021. For 2022, the look is leaner than the lion brow, more defined, and just a little more grown-up. By adding a little more definition to the arch and little less volume overall, the style sculpts while still looking natural. Plus, it’s actually easier to achieve.

BYE-BYE Contour, HELLO Warm Rosy Glow

For the past two years, we’ve witnessed the decline of heavily sculpted glam in favor of a softer snatch. In 2022, contour’s reign will continue to diminish, and instead, a natural, warm bronzed glow will shine into the limelight. Think warm bronzer and blush to add definition to the cheeks.

It’s all about looking naturally flushed and, most importantly, glowy! Think: lit from within rather than sculpted AF.

For this look, your number one priority is seamlessly blending your bronzer and blush. The two products should melt together seamlessly to effortlessly add dimension to your cheekbones. Our new GloWish collection is perfect for this vibe as both the Soft Radiance Bronzing Powder, $31, and Cheeky Vegan Blush Powder, $21, blend and build seamlessly on the skin.

BYE BYE Unrealistic Skin, HELLO Real Skin

The reality is, ‘flawless’ skin does not exist. The idea in itself sets everyone up for failure. The photoshop, the magazines, they all set unrealistic ideals of what skin can be, and in 2022, we’re proud to see many brands fighting back by sharing unedited, diverse skin. 2022 is all about real skin, and real skin functions: It has pores, texture, dullness, dry patches, breakouts. Our skincare goal for 2022? Keep listening to and feeding our skin with a skincare routine that we enjoy and that helps our skin thrive. No matter how diligent we are, there will always be days or weeks where it acts up, but that’s okay. The most important thing is love and acceptance – that’s where the real glow begins.

BYE BYE Minimal, HELLO Maximum

Say goodbye to nude tones, barely-there makeup and naked lids, and make way for vibrant colors, textures, and icy embellishments. In 2022, we’re going to embrace life again and we’re doing it donned in sequins, neon liner, and eye-popping lips.

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s to live life to the fullest (and wash your damn hands!). It may sound corny, but after two years of laying low, we’re ready to come back with a bang. Plus, makeup is the perfect tool for experimentation and creativity, so have fun and be bold. Whether you opt for a floating liner accented with glitter tears or an electric pink lip, do it with confidence and enjoy yourself!

BYE BYE Toxic Beauty Standards, HELLO Self-Love & Acceptance

If there’s one thing we do NOT have the mental energy or even the desire to entertain in 2022, it’s toxic beauty standards. Over the past few years, the beauty industry has had a much-needed wake-up call, and while it’s more inclusive than ever, there’s still more work to be done. Here at Huda Beauty, we’re dedicated to making that happen.

So much of what’s on social media undergoes an instant blurring of pores, a plumping of lips, altering of facial features, and a layering of lashes. The filters and Photoshop do no represent reality, and at HB HQ, we’re dedicated to ending toxic beauty standards. Find out more about how we plan to end toxic beauty standards here. We hope that as we and others spread the message of self-love and show that real skin is beautiful skin, slowly, we can change the industry together.
