Today is World Vegan Day, so to celebrate, we’re spotlighting some incredible vegan beauty brands that we’ll always vouch for and support. Whether buying “only vegan” is your vibe or you’re new to vegan beauty altogether, these brands offer up some of the best formulas on the shelves. When we think back to five years ago, the term vegan beauty was often met with a skeptical frown or a sarcastic joke about lettuce, but the science has come a long way, trust us! Here’s the full tea…

What Does Vegan Beauty Really Mean?

In short and simple terms; vegan beauty means a product with no animal derivatives, including ingredients like beeswax, carmine (a red pigment derived from insects), and lanolin (from sheep’s wool). Don’t confuse this with cruelty-free, which means the product was developed without animal testing. Now you know the terms, here are some of our fave vegan beauty brands…

Best New Vegan Discovery: Dehiya Beauty

First up, we’re shining a light on our latest brand discovery, Dehiya Beauty. In their own words, they’re “Imagined by Morrocco, Made in California.” California is a cult haven for vegans, so it’s just one of those things *TikTok voice* that just makes sense. However, their brand ethos stretches far beyond the term vegan. They use ethically-sourced, native and wild botanicals from around the world, combining modern skincare practices with ancient beauty rituals to amp up your glow from within. They also just won a spot on the Ulta Beauty Muse Accelerator Program, so we expect this brand to be everywhere – it’s one to watch!

Best Vegan Skincare: Biossance

We’ll be forever grateful for all the ahhmazing beauty offerings gifted by Biossance, but in particular, we love the Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 PA +++, $34, which we slather on our face every morning. But the story behind Biossance goes WAY beyond our love for the SPF…

The Biossance story started in their labs in Berkeley, California, where they created an accessible cure for malaria. After this incredible breakthrough, they continued to use innovative biotechnology to make a positive impact, and decided to turn to skincare. Now, they make next-level products rooted in their love of science and sustainability, which meant making 100% vegan and cruelty-free products was a no-brainer.

Best Vegan Body Care: Herbivore

If you’re unfamiliar with Herbivore, let us introduce you to your new fave body care brand. The brand fuels its formulas with highly impactful, natural ingredients that are synthetic-free, ethically sourced, and, you guessed it, 100% vegan. They also package their babies in glass and paper, using recycled & recyclable plastic only when necessary. Basically, they allow for the most stunning #shelfie for the conscious consumer. As for our product picks, we’re low-key obsessed with the Coco Rose Exfoliating Scrub, $38, which features the most delicious yet delicate blend of virgin coconut oil and Morrocan rose to leave your skin feeling smoother than ever.

Best Vegan Makeup Brand: e.l.f.

e.l.f. has always been top tier, but recently, it’s been dropping non-stop hits. Of course, we’re going to mention the most recent VIRAL e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Glow Filter, $14, but that’s not the only dupe it’s delivered in the past year (check out our fave e.l.f. dupes here). Whatever you need to slay a full beat, e.l.f. has you covered, oh, and at the most insane prices. Need a $2 primer? You got it! A $7 liner? Oh hunny, pick one of three! Or a $7 concealer to nix dark circles? They’ll come thru. Plus, they’re all vegan and cruelty-free. Do we need to say any more? We didn’t think so.

Best Vegan Fragrance Brand: Le Labo

Le Labo is a niche fragrance brand that’s a firm favorite in the beauty industry. Seriously, their cult-fragrance Santal 33 Eau de Parfum, $90, is guaranteed to be owned by every beauty editor, period. The gender-neutral fragrance line is ridiculously chic, the scents are bewildering, and PSA: they’re all vegan. You can even shop every scent as a candle, home diffuser, oil, shower gel, body lotion, and a scented notebook. They understood the assignment.

Best Vegan Drugstore Brand: VERSED

If you’re a regular on the blog – hi, welcome back – you’ll most likely know what’s up with VERSED. Since it launched, it’s quickly become our go-to drugstore skincare brand because, in short, it gets the job done *clap, clap, clap* within the affordable price bracket. To discover it was vegan was the cherry on top of the cake. Our fave pick? The Just Breathe Clarifying Serum, $19, as it leaves our skin even, healthy, and hydrated while keeping breakouts at bay.

Best Vegan Haircare: Love Beauty and Planet

Back in 2016, Piyush Jain assembled a small team of Uniliver employees with the task of building a new beauty brand inspired by the consumer desire for formulas packed with natural ingredients. Once they got together, they soon realized they wanted to create a brand with a BIG commitment to sustainability, as well as one that uses ethically sourced ingredients that were 100% vegan and free from animal testing. Mission accomplished.

Now, Love Beauty and Planet offer up a wide range of hair, skin, and body products. Their hair care category is our fave, specifically the eco-conscious shampoos and conditioners, which you can shop easily for your hair texture – they all lather so beautifully and feel hella hydrating.
