After the super natural makeup looks of the Oscars and our recent poll, we discovered that you guys were majorly vibing with a soft glam makeup look, with 75% of you preferring the look to full glam. Other than being slightly heartbroken (we’re cake faces all the way), we knew we had to reach out to the best in the industry to get you the tips on how to do soft glam like an absolute pro.

Queen of soft glam, the mega-talented Pati Dubroff has glammed everyone from Priyanka Chopra, Margot Robbie, Kate Bosworth, and Kerry Washington to Dakota Johnson, Lily Collins, and Charlize Theron. This legendary MUA is one of the hardest working (and most sought-after) in Hollywood and what makes her even more in demand is that her work is not only flawless but seemingly achievable – it’s the ultimate soft glam look. Her sparkly lid look on Chopra at the Oscars?? #GOALS.

“When I’m doing a dramatic eye, even one that has a graphic feel, I always keep the edges softly diffused. I find that very hard edges can be too severe. I also always like to keep some “alive” quality – like a pop of sheen (it can be a clear glow or even glitter) to keep the lid open and bring light to the eye area.” Pati told us.

How to Wear Glitter IRL

Styling celebs for the red carpet is part of Pati’s daily hustle; she told us, “Using a glitter that is suspended in a gel definitely helps reduce messy fallout! And since glitter is a bold look, you can make it softer by using a metallic shadow instead of loose glitter.”

“For Chopra’s Oscar look, I applied Jill Stuart Beauty Iconic Look Eyeshadow (C204), $20, along the crease to create depth and allow the products to stick. I also layered some powder shadows lightly over this warm brown for more staying power.” To keep it soft-glam, Pati recommends: “When doing an eye like this, keeping the lips soft definitely makes it more wearable.”

Is this not the ultimate soft glam look?

How to Choose the Best Makeup Shades for Dark Eyes

Soft glam is all about looking glam without the look wearing you, so complementing your eyes and your outfit is super important. Pati says, “Make sure your eye makeup works with your clothing.” And if you thought there was no difference between makeup tips for different eye colors, Pati explains why you’d be wrong: “I use a lot of gloss and cream shadows on everyone I work with. Especially when eyes are dark tones, it helps them really pop and avoids the eye area from looking dull – too many flat shadows definitely make for a dull eye. (Although matte shadows and creams are crucial for giving eyes dimension!) I think dark-colored eyes can wear virtually any shade, and skin tone plays a big part as well. With that said, black and grey can be tricky, so try layering warm bronzy tones along the crease to help harmonize the eye with the skin tone. I also love bright shadows on dark eyes, like burgundy.”
