When we spend so much money on our skincare regime, there’s nothing more heartbreaking than feeling like our skin isn’t bringing the A-game. But the reason why your skin isn’t slaying could simply be because you’re applying your creams in the wrong order. We know it seems crazy militant, but if you don’t apply your lotions and potions in a specific order, you’re seriously disenabling them from doing their job.
via Giphy
The most important thing is to ensure your skin is completely clean before you apply any hydrating lotions or oils. The general rule is to apply the most lightweight formulas first so they can be easily absorbed without the barrier of heavier creams. After each layer, give your skin time to absorb the product, this will also mean when you’re layering your products they won’t pill – those tiny little balls you get when you’ve used too much product.
How to layer your skincare like a pro:
Step 1: Cleanser
Cleansing should remove any makeup or dirt from your skin while also adding a burst of hydration, and if you wear makeup, you should definitely be double cleansing. To double cleanse, start with a cleansing oil (the most nourishing way to remove any makeup as they’re free from harsh chemicals, soaps, and parabens), then use a foam or gel cleanser (or whichever best suits your skin type). It sounds extra, but it will make sure there’s absolutely no makeup or dirt on your skin before you continue the rest of your regime.
Mask or Exfoliate: Once your skin is completely clean, now is the time to do any extra steps in your routine, like a clay or peel-off mask or exfoliating your skin. If you want to use a sheet mask, you can do this after you’ve toned.
Step 2: Toner
Toning is super important as it removes any grime or makeup residue that your cleanser wouldn’t budge, plus any minerals or chlorine from your water. It will also instantly tighten your pores and help restore your skin’s pH levels for a more even skin tone. For more guidance on choosing the right toner for your skin type, check out our toner guide here.
Essence: If you use an essence in your skincare routine, now is the time to apply.
Spot Treatment: Apply your spot treatment now so it can absorb properly and start working its magic. Allow a few minutes before moving on to your next step.
Step 3: Serum
Serums are lightweight and contain a high concentration of active ingredient. The formula is made up of smaller molecules that are absorbed into the skin at a much deeper level. This makes serums ideal if you’re trying to target a specific skincare issue, like wrinkles or dry skin, as many are packed with hydrating ingredients as well. Like essences, which are basically a more watery version of serums, you only need a small amount – about the size of two pomegranate seeds!
via Giphy
Step 4: Eye Cream
Eye creams can brighten under eyes, reduce puffiness, and add an extra hit of moisture. Depending on the formula it may look like a serum or a thick moisturizer, but now is the time to apply it, as there are fewer ‘barriers’ for it to get through, and it can be absorbed more easily! Always apply your eye cream with your fourth finger in a tapping motion, as this is the weakest finger so you won’t tug or pull the delicate skin. We also love to keep our eye cream in the fridge; it’s the ultimate eye wake-up call in the mornings! Check out our fave eye creams for dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines here.
Tip: If your eye cream contains retinol, you can apply after your moisturizer, as this will lower the risk of it irritating the skin.

Step 5: Moisturizer
Hydrated skin is glowing skin, so NEVER skip your moisturizer. The right moisturizer will hydrate, replenish, restore your skin’s pH levels, and nourish and repair any issues like dry, flaky skin. But it’s also essential that you choose one with the right formula and ingredient list for your skin type. Like if you have dry skin, you need a really rich formula, but if you have acne-prone or oily skin, a gel formula will be your best friend. For our top tips on how to choose the right one, read our moisturizer guide.
How much product you should actually be using:
Step 6: Facial Oil
Without a doubt one of the most powerful potions on your shelf, the small molecular structure of face oils allows them to penetrate deeper into your skin and hydrate at a much deeper level. They also repair and plump your skin, and feed it with amazing natural vitamins. Oil needs to go last because it will create a protective barrier on your skin and lock in water, if not applied last, it could block your other skincare products from penetrating. If you’re on the oily skin list, we recommend only using your face oil at night. Find out how to choose a face oil here.
For our guide on how to pick the right oil, check out our guide here. We like The Ordinary’s Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane – it combines an amazing natural oil (squalane) and a form of retinol, which is the ultimate anti-aging ingredient. You can also make your own face oils for a fraction of the price, check out our DIY tutorial here. You can also skip this step for daytime if you’re using a moisturizer, and go straight to the SPF.
Step 7: Sunscreen
For daytime, this is THE most important step, even during the winter months. Applying a good sunscreen every morning will protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays. An SPF will sit on the surface of your skin acting as a protective barrier against the sun, so you should always apply it last. Check out our fave suncreens here, and our tip for applying sunscreen over your makeup here – remember you need to reapply SPF every two hours.
From this point on you’re officially ready to start applying your makeup!
What about night masks, in specific overnight sleeping mask? Would this be the very last step in the skincare routine?
Hi gorgeous, yes, when we use a sleeping mask or night mask, we use these instead of a moisturizer and we skip face oil. xx
Im using loreal revitalift filler[HA] revolumizing cushion cream when should i use it?
Hi gorgeous, as it’s a moisturizer, you should apply it as the last step in your skincare routine and before any face oils. x
But i already have a moisterizer is it ok if i use this too?
How many times do we have to do our skin care routine in a day?
Hey my love! You should have a morning and evening routine. The nighttime routine will have a few extra steps to keep your skin hydrated while you sleep. Check our guide here – https://hudabeauty.com/essential-skincare-routine-products/ We hope this helps xoxo
Hi! Quick question… how come Korean skincare methods suggest to use masks after serums, not after toner and before serums? And this suggests otherwise… I’m just so confused I’m sorry
I’ve previously studied that lighter wheighted product should go on the skin first so if you’re using a traditional essence it would go on, then Ampoule, serum, then face-mask.
Hi gorgeous, that is a great question! The truth is, you can do your sheet mask before or after serum. Sheet masks are basically drenched in serum, so in Korea, they feel that by applying their serum, then a sheet mask, the mask will help their serum to penetrate further into the skin. So, if you wanted you could tone, essence, serum, sheet mask, moisturizer, oil. Or you could use your serum after you’ve masked. It’s up to you, but we often apply our serum before masking, it just depends on the texture of our serum and what the serum contains. Hope that helps xx
Could recommend a pore filler that works and also a skincare routine for large pores on the T zone.. XX

my skin is very dull..what should i do
Hey my love! If your skin is dull, the best way to brighten it is by using Vitamin C infused skincare products. Check out our fave here – https://hudabeauty.com/dull-skin-texture-this-ingredient-will-fix-your-skin/. Dull skin could also be a result of dead skin so make sure you exfoliate twice a week to buff away dead skin cells. Hello! I’ve dry itchy skin and recently i discovered I’m suffering from eczema. I’m on medication but i don’t have a fixed skincare routine. My skin feels tight, has tiny red bumps, dry flaky skin around the mouth n cheeks and oily t-zone (only after moiturizing) I’ve tried many products but nothing suits my sensitive skin so i finally decided to stick to baby cream n spf. But i need a skin care routine. Please help.
Hey my love! Check out our sensitive skin guide here – https://hudabeauty.com/how-to-deal-with-sensitive-skin-the-dos-and-donts/ We hope this helps xoxo
My skincare starts rolling/flaking when I add my face oil at the end, followed these steps and made sure water comes before gel and last oil. Any ideas why this happens? Can’t find answers online (and yes tried dabbing in the products)
Hey my love! It sounds like your products are pilling. This happens when you apply too much product so try to ease up on the product! Also, make sure you’re allowing 30 seconds or so for the product to absorb fully. We hope this helps x
Hi Love!
Thank you for your answer! Well… I use almost 6 products every night… 7 with oil. Majority skinceuticals just read that Polymers can make everything pilling. Realized that almost ALL of their products (not serums) contains polymers
Is this a beauty routine for the morning or for the night?
Hi gorgeous, this routine works for both. You won’t need SPF at night, and you also won’t need to double cleanse in the morning. x
Should I use the primer after the sunscreen?
Hey my love! Yes, use your primer after. We hope this helps xoxo
Dear team, suggest some skin care routine and products for cabin crew…. Plz

If my moisturizer has essential oil in it, should I still apply my rosehip oil after?
Yes, you can apply your rosehip oil after 🙂 x
I have an acupressure facial clinic and would like to know about using your products and sell them in my salon.
My day moisturiser has SPF in it. Should I wear it before or after the oil?
Hi gorgeous, it might be worth simply using the SPF moisturizer during the daytime and using your oil at nighttime. x
Can I use two different serums at the same time? Maybe put one serum on first then the other serum? I have Bioclarity Zen Ultracalming serum and The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum. So how should I layer those serums? Help please!!
Hey my love! Yes of course – it’s one of our fave K-Beauty tricks. You can actually mix them together in your fingertips and then press them into your skin. We hope this helps xoxo
I am super excited to find this site. I have no idea what I’m doing with my new skin care regimen. My skin has large pores and blackheads in Tzone. I am in my 50s and I have sunspots. Occasionally I feel like I might need more moisture when I stay up too late, etc. and occasionally I will be oily.
I am searching for a new SPF because I don’t like the ones I have.
AM
Cleanser: DR Dennis Gross Alpha Beta pore perfecting cleansing gel
Toner: the ordinary-glycolic acid
Treatment: the ordinary-niacinamide 10% Zinc 1%
Eye: the ordinary-caffeine solution
Oil : plant derived squalane
(I also have the ordinary natural moisturizing factors HA that I haven’t been using because I wasn’t sure if it was too much)
PM
Cleanser-same
Toner-same
Treatment- the ordinary lactic acid 10% HA
Eye-same
Oil-cold presses rose hip seed oil
Once a week I do the ordinary AHA 30%. BHA 2% peeling solution
My skin has greatly improved with this but could I do better?
Hi gorgeous, this sounds amazing! x
Hello HB Team. My anti age serum is cold pressed oil (all my skin care is 100% natural and bio). I use it as night care without moisturiser. However, I am introducing the moisturiser now and wondering what order should they be – oil serum then moisturiser or the other way around?
Hey my love! You should apply your serum, moisturizer and then oil. We hope this helps xx
I have recently purchased rose seed hip oil to incorporate into my skincare routine. If I use a sunscreen that doubles as moisturizer, what would then be the recommended order for using the oil?
Thanks!
Hey my love! If it’s a moisturizer that contains SPF, you should apply your oil after. Although in the summer we’d recommend a stand-alone SPF to ensure you’re getting adequate sun protection xx
I was wondering where hyulorinic acid sits in this hierarchy? I usually apply it first, then serum, then under eye gel, then moisturiser.
Yes, that’s perfect 🙂 x
What is the best products or methods or order should i use …if i have ance-prone skin
Hey my love! Check out this post for all our tips of treating and soothing acne-prone skin – https://hudabeauty.com/what-causes-acne/ We hope this helps xoxo
Hi Huda,
Could you kindly let me know the right order for the below?
– Face mask
– Cleanser
– Scrub
Thank you sooo much for all your amazing work.
Hi gorgeous, start by using your cleanser to ensure all makeup and dirt is gone. Then use your scrub (gently) and then use your face mask. Although if your face mask is exfoliating, we wouldn’t recommend doing the scrub on the same day. xx
After I have gone through the 8 daily steps for my face, can I still go ahead and apply makeup on top?
Yes 🙂 Your skin will be perfectly hydrated and prepped! x
Hello!
Could you possibly let me know if the order of my skin care is right! Iv just come out of hospital after a brain injury and I’m struggling to remember my routine!!!
•Day
Indee Lee q10 toner
Drunk elephant c day serum
Drunk elephant b hydra serum
Dr sams moisturiser
SPF
•Night
Coconut oil cleanser
Dr Sams cleanser
The ordinary glycolic toner
Indeed lab eye treatment
Drunk elephant glycolic serum or replace this with the indeed lab retinol Lines & Wrinkles (not sure if I use this in the evening instead of the DE glycolic serum!!)
Marula oil or the-ordinary-niacinamide-10-zinc-1.html swap between the two every other night!
Drunk elephant moisturiser protini
My skin in moral to combination!!
Many thanks for your help!
Hi gorgeous, We hope you are well and recovering quickly! Your routine looks amazing. 10 out of 10 for your daytime routine!!
For evening we suggest:
Coconut oil cleanser
Dr Sams cleanser
The ordinary glycolic tone
the-ordinary-niacinamide-10-zinc
Drunk elephant glycolic serum or indeed lab retinol Lines & Wrinkles (either is good for night time and we would recommend giving your skin a couple of nights a week without either of these, as both are quite exfoliating, so maybe alternate days and give yourself a break in between each.
Indeed lab eye treatment
Drunk elephant moisturizer protini
Marula oil (oils are the perfect finishing touch to keep all that moisture locked in)
We hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions. Wishing you a speedy recovery! xx
This was really helpful wonders of info for skincare short n productive info I am gonna follow this routine
Thank you so much for this info I really needed it . Your are the best beauty guide ever .love u lots
When you spend so much money on your skincare regime, there’s nothing more heartbreaking than feeling like our skin isn’t bringing that much of results. The Annimateo skin-care products you should be included in your routine, along with the order of which they should be applied, something you should do 1-3 times a week depending on the mask.
thanks for sharing
I have been following you on Instagram and I Love watching your tutorials! You are such a beautiful person inside and out.. just purchased my 1st Huda Beauty Product. The New Nude Palette. So excited.
Hi Huda, i tried this for 7 days and now my face has grainy texture that won’t go away. What possibly would i have done wrong? How do i get rid of grainy texture??
Hi gorgeous, it sounds like you need to exfoliate. We recommend using a toner or cleanser that has AHAs in, so you’re consistently keeping dead skin cell build-up at bay. We love the REN Ready Steady Glow AHA tonic for every day, but you can also use an exfoliator. Check out this DIY exfoliator which will leave your skin SO smooth > https://hudabeauty.com/the-best-exfoliator-costs-less-than-2/. We recommend exfoliating after cleansing two or three times a week, or once a twice if you’re using a facewash or toner with AHAs. Hope that helps xx
Hey Huda team! I was wondering if it was bad for your skin to use more than one serum in your skin care routine? Like I have a glycolic acid serum, and a vitamin c serum and NO7 laboratories line correcting booster serum. Is it bad to use all of them in my skin care routine? Please help! I can’t find anything on using more than one serum and I really don’t want to be damaging my skin! (Trying to stay looking good and young over hereeeee 😛 ) thank you!
Hey my love! If you’re using three serums nightly, then you’ll most likely be overwhelming your skin. We’d instead recommend alternating each night. Also, it may also be a good idea to check the ingredient list to ensure you’re not using two or more products with the same active ingredient as that could also overwhelm your skin. We hope this helps xoxo
Hey my love! For our essential routine, and to find out when we use each product check out this post https://hudabeauty.com/essential-skincare-routine-products/ We hope it helps xoxo
Hey my love! You should apply your oil after your moisturizer. We hope that helps oxox
I wanted to ask my moisturiser contains an inbuilt spf 30 in anyway so I do apply oils before this or after this, based on the fact the cream contains spf.
SPF cream
Hi Ms. Huda..I have so many issue related to my skin..I have combination skin (t zone) in addition to this my skin is very thin and I have acne problem, oily scalp with dandruff and I have little puffy eyes..Kindly suggest me what skin routine shall I follow
Hi gorgeous, SPF is SO essential for getting rid of dark spots! If you’re not wearing sunscreen every day (factor 30 with a 4-star UVA rating) then the sun will continue to make dark spots darker and they won’t be able to heal and fade. Rosehip Seed Oil is a great oil for helping scars to fade (you can find it online), and you can apply this every night after your moisturizer to help fade scars. To prevent dark spots, it’s really important that you don’t pick at pimples (we know it’s so tempting), as this is more likely to make them scar. Check out our guide for helping to get rid of acne here > https://hudabeauty.com/2018/05/19/everything-you-need-to-know-to-banish-acne/ Also this routine could be used on your skin, although check out this post on teen skin: https://hudabeauty.com/2018/09/21/5-skincare-rules-every-teen-should-live-by/ Hope this helps xx
Thaaaaank u so muuuchhhhhh to be here abd help us ! You have the best blog ever ! My skin its so a problem for me haha ! ❤️❤️❤️ Team Huda beauty the beeest ever ❤️
Hey my love! This would typically be our evening routine. In the morning, we would opt for a simpler regime to save time! We would simply cleanse, tone, moisturize, apply eye cream and then also apply SPF. Check out the link below for more deets. We hope this helps x
https://hudabeauty.com/2018/03/02/my-daytime-skincare-routine-takes-less-than-1-minute/
I just purchased these steps but my question is. Do you do this in the morning or at night?
Hey my love! You can use your facial mist pretty much whenever, or when your skin feels like it needs a little extra moisture or it’s getting hot. Apply it before you moisturize as this will help your product to penetrate the skin more deeply rather than when its dry. We hope this helps xxx
Hey my love! Here is the link https://hudabeauty.com/2018/05/13/the-skincare-step-you-should-never-skip/ We hope this helps xx
Hi beauty<3, I can not see the toner guide 🙁
Hey my love! Make sure you look for lightweight products that are water-based and are NON-ACNEGENIC, NON-COMEDOGENIC as these will hydrate your skin without leaving it greasy. Plus, look out for skincare products that contain hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, and retinol. We hope this helps xx
Hello Huda … just seeing your post now…. Thank you so much… i am really in love with your post already
Hey gorg! You should use a day cream (in the morning) and your night cream (in the evening) as your “moisturizing” step which is the sixth step in your skincare regime. We hope this helps xx
Hey my love! We don’t have that product list on our review list at the moment, but after looking at the product and the ingredient list it looks like a super hydrating, light weight moisturizer. You should use it like any other face moisturizer; as the sixth step in your routine. We hope this helps xx
HI Huda, I really have oily skin,I don’t know what to do. I used a lot of products to oivoid it ! but nothing works on me.
can you please help me with that?
thanks 🙂
Hey, hudabeauty i started using this order to put on my skincare products but i have a question i also use an day/night cream when should i put this one on my skin?
Hi Huda! I just love your blog and I’ve gotten so much better at understanding my skin all cause of you! I wanted to ask if you plan to review the new Vichy Mineral 89? And where do you think it fits in the skin care process? Thanks!
Hello huda,,,i really love love your advices
Ihope you can tell us the most effective homemade product of each of these thing
Because it may be safer and cheaper
Hi gorgeous, Dermarolling and red light therapy are really great at fading the marks left behind by acne, while retinoids can also help improve the appearance. Check out our blog about getting rid of acne scars here > https://hudabeauty.com/2017/05/18/say-bye-felicia-to-stubborn-acne-scars-with-these-3-things/
We also have some tips for more stubborn scarring here > https://hudabeauty.com/2018/04/22/beauty-101-treat-every-type-scar/
Hope this helps. xx
I use way more moisturizer than a blueberyy sized portion hahah
Hey Huda ❤️,
I am in my late twenties and lately I break out sometimes here and there which takes up few days to dry up but the actual problem is the dark mark it leaves behind and this wouldn’t fade away for not weeks but months.Kindly, suggest me an effective product fo this.
P.S- You are the best ❤️❤️❤️
Hey my love! We have replied to your comment above. We hope you find our recommendations helpful xox
I’m learning how to apply makeup Should I apply primer last or before spf?
H gorgeous, apply your primer after your SPF 🙂 Check out our makeup guide for beginners here > https://hudabeauty.com/makeup-guide-for-beginners/
xx
Hey my love! We have replied to your comment above! We hope you find it helpful! xo
Hey my love! We totally understand how annoying it can be when our skin is acting out. In general, a great brand to go to for affordable skincare is The Ordinary. For your skin, we would recommend the Hyaluronic acid 2% + B5, $10.90, or the 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rosehip Seed Oil, $16.90 (Find out more by reading our post, linked below). For an affordable cleanser, the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Cream Cleanser is a great option as it helps remove any impurities or any excess oil while gently exfoliating your skin. When it comes to moisturizer the Neutrogena Hydro Boost is really good for oily/combination skin as it’s super lightweight so will hydrate your skin without leaving it feeling greasy. For a spot treatment, we would always recommend the Mari Badescu Drying Lotion. Read our full review, by clicking the link below! We hope this helps! xoxox

Thank you soooooo much for your help you have no idea how grateful i am for your advice, this means the world to me!!❤️❤️I will definitely check out all these products and try them!! Should i use both the ordinary’s hyaluronic acid 2%+b5 and the 100% organic cold-pressed rose hip seed oil or just get one of them ?again thank you sooo much for all your efforts ❤️❤️❤️Im sorry for the many below comments they wouldnt be posted earlier and when i check back they would be gone so i kept trying thinking my comments were deleted
Hey my love! Don’t worry, we’re are always here to help. Sometimes it just takes a little time for the comments to make it through our system! WIth the Ordinary products, you could get both as they have completely different purposes. But since you’ve got a quite a lot of products on your shopping list, we would recommend the rosehip oil for now. As the Hyaluronic acid is a hydrator and is to be used alongside a moisturizer, so just make sure you buy the moisturizer first! We hope this helps xox
Yes, after SPF 😉 xx
Hey sweetie! We’re so glad that you find the blog post helpful! When it comes to applying your primer, you should apply it after your oil, just before you apply your foundation. When it comes to product advice, if you check out these posts it will help you tailor your skincare regime to your skin type. We hope this helps xoxo

Hey gorgeous, Yes, this is the order you should apply your products every time, but you don’t have to do all the steps if you don’t have the time or have all the products. In the morning, you can just cleanse once, then maybe apply a toner and essence, then moisturizer, and then most importantly SPF! Check out why SPF is SOOOO important >> https://hudabeauty.com/2018/05/24/the-ultimate-guide-to-spf/

Hey do you have to do this in the morning and night ♥️
Hi. Brilliant article and so easy to understand! I also love all of your blogs! They’re just so useful and also fun! I just wanted to ask when would you apply your Primer? Is this after the oil? Also, I have quite dry skin but sometimes an oily t-zone. So any skin care products you can recommend will be much appreciated! Thanks and Ramadan Kareem to you all x
Great article. What kind of sunscreen and spf do you recommend for dry, sensitive and reactive skin?
Hey my love. For sensitive skin, we would recommend using the Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen, $12. You can purchase it from the link below!

Hey my love. If you have combination skin then the Cetaphil PRO Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30 is perfect for you. Its super lightweight so it won’t clog your pores, plus it will help regulate oil production. But it’s still really hydrating and will relieve any dryness. It’s honestly so good! We hope this helps xxx
Hey my love! If you want to apply a mask, apply it onto cleansed skin. So cleanse first, then use your mask and then proceed to follow the next skincare steps. xoxox

Whenever I use foundation, my face starts producing rashes and acne and they never gone whatever I use to get rid of them. Nothing suits me better. I have combination skin. HUDA – the God of beauty , please suggest me something homemade..
Love this article. This is one of the most important article that i have read ❤️❤️❤️
Hi my love! For the best drugstore buy, just look for anything that contains witch hazel as it’s an antibacterial and will naturally draw out any toxins or excess oil. For targeted pimple destruction, try the Boots Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Spot Wand, $6, which has a day and a night formula for 24-hour control. Our favorite high-end product would be the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, check out our blog post on it here – https://hudabeauty.com/2018/01/29/will-this-product-dry-your-acne-overnight/ . We hope this helps! xoxo
