The holiday season has officially started, which means your schedule’s probably jam-packed with festive fun and office parties. And this means you’re going to need to look cute and selfie-ready all season long. To help you sleigh in the hair department, we spoke to celebrity hairstylist Matthew Collins, who works with mega babes like Cindy Crawford, Hunter Schafer, and Kristen Stewart. He shared with us his fave trending styles and how to DIY them at home.

But, before we get into the hairstyles, Matthew reminds us that all bomb hairstyles start and finish the same way: “It all starts with a great blow-dry to smooth the hair first before the texture is added. And finishing with a great spray to lock in the look but keeping it still soft to touch.”

The Trending Hairstyle: Waves… But Make Them Chill

We know what you’re thinking, ‘curls for the holidays, what’s new?’ Well, this is different to the classic Hollywood curl of party seasons gone by. This year’s look is a distinctly cooler vibe: “Silky beach waves have had a huge moment and will stick around for a while. Though, a tighter bent “s” wave is now really hot. It presents a more natural and tousled look,” Matthew explains.

If you want to work the hairstyle, Matthew suggests, “Wearing the hair down paired with a simple super elegant outfit for balance.” Alternatively, if you’re going for a more laid-back vibe, Matthew adds “You can use the texture as a base, then put your hair up to compliment your outfit and desired vibe of the look.” Adding, “It all depends on the outfit and then how you want to feel. If you want the look to be elevated, use your hair to make the entire look fancier or if you feel your outfit is too fancy use something more chill to bring it down.”

For a Glam Feel: Accessorised Waves

If you’re planning on wearing your hair down, Matthew suggests to “Create a ripple wave in the hair worn in a center parting to create a ‘cool factor.'” For some added glam Matthew says to, “Tuck one side behind the ear and fasten the hair back with a hair accessory that complements the outfit or jewelry you’re wearing. Accessories are a key way to add a wow factor to any holiday look.”

We totally agree! Pearl hair clips are everywhere right now, so you can pick them up from any accessory store or online at Kitsch. We’re loving the Open Shape Pearl Barrette, $12, as well as the Pearl Bobby Pins, $12, which look great stacked.

Singular pearls are another easy option as they can be worked into any hairstyle. We love how celeb hairstylist Lacy Redway worked them into Tessa Thompson’s box braids.

For a Laid Back Vibe: A Low Ponytail

“If the outfit is simple, create the same texture and add extra texture spray for grip, then pull your hair back into a low ponytail. I like to leave some pieces out around your face. Then, twist four pieces of the pony and pin the hair around the ponytail so it’s all up. Don’t fasten the ends in, let them live out. This look is elegant but has a great, cool texture,” Matthew tells us. We love the addition of wrapping the ponytail, it’s super easy and so chic!

3 Products For Easy Styling:

To recreate these styles as easily as possible, Matt recommends using some of his fave styling products that he couldn’t live without:

  1. Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, $399: “My Dyson supersonic blow dryer never overheats the hair to leave hair super shiny and healthy, which is always vital when creating a beautiful look.” explains Matt. It’s a big investment but if you blow-dry regularly, your hair will seriously thank you.
  2. Flow Hair Care ROOT REBOOT Texture & Root Refresher Spray, $22: “This is my fave working texture spray for volume and grip when putting hair up.”
  3. L’oréal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray Extra Strong, $11: “It’s light and airy but still locks in every look for maximum hold with a soft-to-touch feel.”
