If you’re familiar with the straight-up nightmare of oily eyelids, don’t worry, we got you. While in the grand scheme of things they’re NBD, after years of greasy lids, patchy eyeshadow, and floating liner, we decided to find a fail-proof solution. Of course, we tried the usual eyeshadow primers (our fave is Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $24) but we decided it was time to get creative and these tips are the real deal. Here are our top five tips to banish oily eyelids, for good.

1. Use transfer-proof products that *actually* last

It may seem obvious but finding products that are long-lasting and transfer-proof is essential for oily-lids. Only buy products that have (at least) a 24-hour staying power, especially when it comes to mascara and eyeliner. Before you buy it, trial it for a day to see how it wears on your eyes and if it stands up to the test. One of our all-time favorite mascaras is the BADGirl Bang! Volumizing Mascara, $25, because it doesn’t flake or smudge and it’s waterproof, aka oily-eyelid resistant. We realize we’re biased but the same goes for the Huda Beauty Life Liner, $25, it’s the longest-lasting formula we’ve ever used and the liquid eyeliner is tested to last for 48 hours!

2. Blot away the oil

Blotting papers are the real deal for saving oily skin from midday shine as they remove oil in seconds by absorbing oil that’s sitting on the surface; most importantly, without moving your makeup. And so naturally, gently pressing a piece of blotting paper onto your lid before you do your eye makeup will remove any oily residue, creating the best canvas for you to have smear-free lids all day long.

We love the Boscia Green Tea Blotting Linens, $10, they’re made from 100% natural abaca leaf fiber and are infused with soothing green tea and skin-calming willowherb. You can also DIY your own blotting papers using paper napkins and setting powder.

3. Use a mattifying primer

If you don’t have an eyeshadow primer to hand, then dw, you can use any mattifying primer – it keeps your T-Zone oil-free, and it does the same for your lids! The Huda Beauty Matte Perfection Pre-Makeup Base, $32, is our go-to. With just one drop it absorbs excess oil and keeps oil in check all day long. Just be wary that with most mattifying primers, a little goes a long way, and if you apply too much product it could irritate the sensitive skin around your eye. We also recommend checking that the primer is safe to be used around the eye.

4. Set your lid

Setting your foundation is the key to it staying in place all day long, and the same goes for your lids. Once we’ve applied a thin layer of foundation to our lids, and baked our under eyes, we take the damp makeup sponge covered in loose setting powder and press it into our lid. This immediately prevents creasing and sets and mattifies the skin. Alternatively, you can use a small face brush to apply a light dusting of setting powder to your lid. We use our Huda Beauty Easy Bake Powder,  $34, but you can use any loose translucent or skin-toned powder you have.

5. Apply a liquid eyeshadow

Another great product to apply is a matte liquid eyeshadow like our Matte and Metal Melted Shadows, $25. Use a shade that is similar to your skin tone and apply the shadow all over the lid. This creates a clean canvas for eyeshadow or eyeliner application while ensuring that it doesn’t move throughout the day.
