The internet is currently OBSESSING over Pattern Beauty; a haircare line created by the iconic Tracee Ellis Ross. The brand was created with one mission; to fulfill the unmet beauty needs of the curly, coily, & tight-textured hair community. Tracee recalls her struggles over the past 20 years to find hair products that are a) hydrating enough to give her the best curl of her life b) large enough so she doesn’t have to buy a new bottle each week and c) are relatively affordable. Pattern ticks every box.

The line currently has a range of shampoos, conditioners, and serums, as well as a wet brush and microfiber towel. On the website, it also outlines what product will suit your curl type the most; they actually have three different conditioners to cater to curly, coily, and tight textures. Products aside, their Instagram page is life-changing.

No curly hair list would be complete without Shea Moisture. The brand was founded in 1912 by Sofia Tucker in a village market in Sierra Leone. By the age of 19, she was selling shea butter, African black soap, and other homemade hair and skin recipes all over the country. Since then, they have continued to offer up some of the most nourishing, soothing formulas on the market. All of the ingredients are ethically sourced and packed with beauty benefits like black pearl protein, black seed oil, and baobab oil.

Our fave curl-friendly products include the Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk, $10, which smooths the cuticle without weighing it down and the Raw Shea Butter Moisturizing Transitioning Milk, $11, a must-have if you’re transitioning from chemically treated hair to natural locks.

DevaCurl is another brand created by a curly girl for curly girls, and it’s a celeb fave. Our girl crush, Lizzo, told the New York Times; that the products are “really dope and “smell so good,” and we totally agree. We love their formulas – you can instantly tell they’re made with the curly girl method in mind: The No-Poo Zero Lather Conditioning Cleanser, $10, cleans the scalp without stripping away the natural oils your curls rely on, to give ultimate shape and definition to curls. They even have a ‘How to quit shampoo for frizz-free defined curls’ starter pack, as well as an intensive treatment for fragile locks, which again is ideal if you’re transitioning from treated to natural hair.

Ouidad was founded in 1984 and has been offering up some insane formulas ever since. The brand identifies four different curl types; loose, classic, tight, and kinky, and have a line of products specifically formulated for each hair type. We’d recommend checking out their website before purchasing a product as it breaks down these four categories and explains what exactly your curl needs, whether it’s natural proteins for finer curls or botanicals for tighter curls.
