Ok, we’re going to help you save LOADS of money. We’ve had a face oil epiphany and realized that creating your own oil is not only SO much cheaper but incredibly easy and good for your skin. Face oils add nourishment, vitamins, and antioxidants to your skin, providing everything from brightening to soothing properties – they’re the ultimate final step in your skincare routine. But if you love face oils as much as us, you’ll know how expensive they can be, and spending $50 can be intimidating. So, we thought, why not use natural oils to make our own amazing face oil for less than $10? When you purchase these oils in their rawest form, they’re a lot cheaper than branded face oils, and you’ll be able to concoct tons of different oils for a fraction of the price.

After all, we’re obsessed with natural oils, so why should we choose which awesome oil to use every night? So we started experimenting and mixed some of our go-to oils (like grapeseed oil, rose oil, jojoba oil, and rosehip seed oil), and the results were mind-blowing. Not only is a DIY face oil 100% OG (something HB HQ is all about), but by combining your fav natural oils, you can target your skin’s unique needs by creating a face oil with natural oils that pack the right benefits for you. And the best part? It’ll take you less than 60 seconds to make. It’s a skincare game-changer. (Plus, it’s really fun and makes you feel like an undercover chemist).

THE BASICS

Face oils are typically made of two different types of oil: a carrier oil and an essential oil. A carrier oil will act as the base, while the essential oil is much more potent and will have more healing and nourishing power.

Carrier Oils: Apricot oil, Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, Evening Primrose oil, Sweet Almond oil, Squalane oil, Argan oil, Hemp oil, Sesame oil, Marula oil, Castor oil.
Essential oils: Lavender oil, Rosehip oil, Lemongrass oil, Tea-Tree oil, Jasmine oil, Chamomile oil, Carrot Seed oil.

How to mix: The general rule is for every 30ml of carrier oil, you can use one drop of essential oil. You can also mix different carrier oils if you keep the carrier-to-essential oil ratio the same.

It’s important to use high-quality oils, preferably cold-pressed organic, which means it hasn’t been processed using any harmful toxins. Combining your natural oils will make a far more effective potion, so you won’t have to apply as much product, and they’ll last much longer. We prefer to keep our DIY face oils in a glass bottle as it’s reusable and completely chemical-free. Then when you’ve placed the ingredients into the bottle, roll it between the palms of your hands for approximately 30 seconds to mix the oils. Here’s a list of our favorite oils to use, with our go-to recipe for every skin type.

DRY SKIN DIY FACE OIL

Best carrier oils: Avocado oil, Sweet Almond oil, Apricot oil, Camellia Oil, Rosehip oil
Best essential oils: Lavender oil, Geranium oil, Jasmine oil, Cedarwood Seed Oil

This oil is super nourishing, making it the ultimate cure for dry or sensitive skin. A Japanese favorite loved by Geishas, Camellia Seed oil is crazy hydrating because its molecular weight is almost identical to our skin, allowing it to be absorbed quickly. It’s also full of skin-boosting omegas, just like Sea Buckthorn Berry oil, which is a rich source of omega 7, a rare fatty acid that’ll nourish, heal, soften scarring, and strengthen the skin. Finally, the Rose oil will not only instantly brighten but also contains a powerful antiseptic that can help soothe breakouts. Simply mix 60ml of Camellia Seed oil with two drops of Sea Buckthorn Berry oil and two drops of Rose oil in a glass bottle. It’ll transform your skin.

NORMAL / COMBINATION SKIN DIY FACE OIL

Best carrier oil: Apricot oil, Jojoba oil, Grapeseed oil, Sweet Almond oil.
Best essential oil: Lavender oil, Frankincense oil, Geranium oil.

This combo is so good: Mix 60ml of Grapeseed oil with three drops of Lavender oil and three drops of Geranium oil. The Grapeseed oil (which regularly takes center stage in our life) is packed with antioxidants, keeps shine in check, boosts collagen, and gives you a stunning glow, while the Lavender oil soothes and helps keep breakouts at bay. The Geranium oil will also help boost cell growth and renewal, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

OILY SKIN DIY FACE OIL

Best carrier oils: Jojoba oil, Argan oil, Grapeseed oil.
Best essential oils: Lavender oil, Frankincense oil, Tea Tree oil, Rosemary oil, Peppermint oil.

For a truly revolutionary oil, combine 30ml of Jojoba oil, 30ml of Grapeseed oil, and two drops of Eucalyptus oil. It’ll add a much-needed hit of moisture (it’s possible to have dehydrated, oily skin), and the Eucalyptus and Jojoba oil will work as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, so it’ll actually help prevent breakouts. The Jojoba oil is amazing at controlling oil production, as the waxy structure mimics human sebum, tricking your skin into producing less oil. It’s also full of antioxidants and vitamins B and C that’ll brighten your skin too. Plus, as the Grapeseed oil is super lightweight so it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy.

MATURE SKIN DIY FACE OIL

Best carrier oils: Rosehip oil, Jojoba oil, Sweet Almond oil, Avocado oil, Tamanu oil.
Best essential oils: Rose oil, Lavender oil, Jasmine oil, Geranium oil.

Rosehip oil is honestly THE anti-aging oil – even Gwyneth Paltrow swears by it! For the most divine-smelling oil, mix 60ml of Rosehip seed oil with two drops of Rose essential oil and two drops of Frankincense oil. The Rose oil is an amazing anti-inflammatory, and it’s full of vitamin C, which will give your skin an instant glow, while the frankincense will boost skin renewal, tone, and tighten, giving you a more even complexion. It’s the most luxurious, pore-busting radiance booster we’ve ever made.

Our DIY version of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil:

We even tried recreating our favorite branded face oil, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil, $47, and the results were amazing! Using their oil as our inspiration, we took the same three oils Kiehl’s list as their key ingredients – Lavender Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, and Squalane Oil – and decided to create our own. As both Evening Primrose oil and Squalane oil are carrier oils, we used half of each to create the same 30ml quantity on our fav Kiehl’s recipe – 15ml of Primrose, 15ml of Squalane, and 2 drops of lavender oil. Honestly, it felt so nourishing on our skin, and it smelt great too! But the best part of the whole experience? It only cost us $6.78 to make our own 30ml bottle (Kiehl’s Midnight Recover Oil is 30ml), saving us $40.22! Like we said – it’s a major money saver!

We promise as soon as you start mixing your face oils, you won’t be able to stop! We wish we had started doing this sooner! Let us know your fav oils for DIYing in the comments below.
