It’s easy to throw your mane up haphazardly when it’s a scorcher outside, but these stars prove a little attention to detail goes a long way. Obviously having a major stylist on speed dial helps too, but luckily for you, we know a few pros who lent their expert advice. From whimsical braids adorned with baubles and nature-inspired extras to buns every which way, there’s no shortage of updo inspo in this slideshow to get you in the mood for summer – or the best hair day of your life.
Shay Mitchell’s Sky-High Top Knot

Shay can do no wrong in our beauty book, but we do need to give some credit to one of her mane men, celeb stylist Jesus Guerrero. He tells us “the key for these two looks, is prep work, so make sure you have a good basic texture and don’t put too much thought into the ‘do as it’s supposed to be effortless.” To achieve a sexy-top knot, he swears by Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray, $44, to add the “piecey-effect.”
Kiernan Shipka’s Daisy Plaits

R+Co Collective member and celeb stylist, Ashley Streicher, just turned out one of our favorite braided updos this season – daisy braids?! We’re obsessed. Also because you can achieve them without hot tools, AKA ideal for balmy days. To try it – for festivals, or just an average day of causing everyone to stop and stare – follow Streicher’s tips:
Section hair down the middle and separate into two parts, then apply R+Co x Fred Segal Control Flexible Paste, $28, to both sections before you begin braiding. Create an inside-out French braid for each, and once both braids are secure, dust with R+Co Skyline Dry Shampoo Powder, $36, then begin pulling out the braids until they’re nice and fat. Decorate with fresh dried daisies (or vintage daisy pins), adhering with eyelash glue and setting with hairspray.
Emma Watson’s Low Bun and Boater Hat

“This is one of my personal favorite ways to stay cool in the summer,” says stylist, colorist, and owner of Butterfly Studio Salon in NYC, Kattia Solano. “A low bun will keep the hair off your neck and a wide-brim hat will keep the sun off your skin and if you’re worried about hat hair, just secure the bun with a pin, instead of a band, to make sure you still have a good hair day underneath.” Solano also recommends prepping hair with Oribe Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray, $42, before rocking a hat. “This protects against frizz and breakage,” she adds.
Rocky Barnes’ Butterfly Pigtail Braids

Another festival-friendly approach to timeless pigtail braids is Rocky Barnes’ butterfly version. “I couldn’t get enough of this look,” says Solano, “and you shouldn’t limit your creativity when it comes to accessorizing hair. From adding safety pins to yarn, to an artsy earring you can pretty much get away with anything as long as you braid it in.” Solano’s advice for achieving accessorized braids is to use texturizing spray before braiding. “This will ensure the hair is gritty enough to hold on to any small additives and my go-to Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $46.”
Meghan Markle’s Low-Key Bun

The best part about Meghan Markle’s effortless bun (other than the fact that it’s super easy to do), is that it keeps shorter hairs or fringe from falling back into your face. Odete DaSilva, master colorist, stylist, and owner of Artistex Salon and Spa in Westport, CT, advises adding braids into the base, to “create an illusion of volume.” To get her look, first create the braid in front and fasten everything into a pony, securing with a fabric band as any other pony. Then, braid the pony and wrap the braid around like a bun. Secure with pins and use the curling iron barrel of a StyleCraft Style Stix, $70, to lightly smooth wispys back into place. Finish with spray and if you have a thinner pony, DaSilva recommends creating two braids and gently tugging at them to fake thickness, before securing.

Her pony may be extra long (and extra tricked out), but keeping it tight instead of messy (when it could graze the back of your neck) won’t make you sweaty. Kylie’s stylist Cesar Ramirez wanted her ‘do to be “ethereal and beautiful,” so he slicked the hair back into a mid-crown pony using IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm, $29, attached a 22” Wildform hairpiece, and braided both together using IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel, $29.
Add in seashells, nautical clips – even glass crosses if you desire – and top off with a little IGK Intern Flexible Hairspray, $29, to keep everything in place.

According to Matrix celeb colorist, George Papanikolas, this braid parade may look complex, but it’s actually just French braids wrapped around the head and not as hard to DIY as you would think. To channel Em’s goddess style, start by using a texturizing spray like the Matrix Style Link Texture Builder Messy Finishing Spray, $18, to give the hair grip with a semi-messy texture before braiding, then assemble the crown, pin, and voilà.

Colombian YouTuber PauTips has a lot going on here, but you can either concentrate on one thing (I.e. the bedazzled center streak, or the braided bun pony) or recreate the whole shebang. To get her look, Ramirez prepped hair with IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray, $32, which he likes because it “gives a keratin-esque finish” and after adding waves, he applied a few drops of IGK Crybaby Anti-Frizz Smoothing Serum, $25, for glossiness and spritzed on a texture spray. PS – the charms and hair jewels are from his new @thewildform headdress line coming in a few weeks.
Kim Kardashian’s Origami Updo

If you’re not a fan of top knots in public, opt for Kim K’s neat, stylish bun instead. DaSilva, loves it for its architectural element of interest and polished vibe. To recreate it, first, gather the hair back in a pony and secure with a band to ensure minimal movement, still leaving the ends exposed. “No one wants to constantly re-wrap or pin hair meant to stay up throughout the day, so keeping it in place with the band is key,” says DaSilva.
Once the bun is up, use StyleCraft Professional 1 Ultra Straightening Iron, $100, to smooth out ends and spray Goldwell Style Sign Curly Twist Curl Control 2 Moisturizing Curl Cream, $16, to give hold and heat protection. Then have the ends going in different directions: up, down, sideways, all around, etc, and spray away – you’ll need lots of hold for this look.
