Here at HB HQ, we consider ourselves pretty well versed in the array of salon treatments; brow lamination, lash extensions, lash lifts, tints, waxing – you name it, we’ve tried it. So, when we saw a new brow technique called eyebrow extensions pop up on our Instagram feed, we wanted to know all of the deets. Especially considering brow extensions can transform thin, sparse, patchy brows into jaw-dropping, natural-looking brows. Whether you want thick, arched or bushy, it’s completely customizable, and we’re obsessed with the before and after pictures.
After seeing the insane results of tiny little hairs being glued on to brows, our head was full of questions; how long does it last? Is it expensive? So we spoke to celeb lash and brow expert Clementina Richardson, Founder of Envious Lashes in NYC, who has worked with Goddesses like Mary J Blige and Naomi Campbell – she knows what’s up! Here’s everything you need to know about eyebrow extensions.
What Are Eyebrow Extensions?
If the concept of eyebrow extensions seems kinda crazy to you, Clementina clarifies “Eyebrow Extensions are very similar to eyelash extensions. False brow hairs are applied using a medical-grade adhesive either directly to the skin or on existing eyebrows.” However, “With eyebrow extensions, the actual fibers are attached directly to the skin or the eyebrow hair itself, unlike lash extensions where you need natural eyelashes to attach the extension to.” Plus, in comparison to microblading, according to Clementina, they’re a “Safer, less expensive, and less invasive service than microblading!”

Who are Brow Extensions For?
“Anyone who is looking to improve their natural brows is a great candidate. Plus, those looking to add volume, a more defined arch, it makes the brow area appear larger and fuller.” However, Clementina mostly recommends them for a “special event like a wedding or red-carpet premiere,” and we have to agree! Costing anywhere between $150 to $350, this isn’t a cheap fix and considering these will likely last a maximum of two weeks, it’s not a long-term fix either. Brow extensions are extremely delicate, and if you have very sparse brows with few brow hairs to fix the extensions to, these hairs will last much less time, as there is less for the adhesive to grip too.

What to Expect at a Brow Extension Appointment
If you’re thinking of scheduling a brow appointment, and the “process can take thirty minutes to two hours based on the desired look,” says Clementina. So clear some space in your schedule.
Your brow artist will work with you to choose a brow hair color that best suits you and the look you’re going for, although Clementina recommends brown or black, explaining “We use only two universally-flattering colors at Envious Lashes, which are brown and black. Brown is the most popular and goes with many types of skin tones.” If you have very fair hair, it’s worth exploring slightly lighter color options for a more natural look.
Another thing to note: “The hair width is extremely important. The strands of hair used must be very fine for a natural look, otherwise, it’ll look fake, almost like bad hair plugs! Several different lengths are also used to create a natural look,” Clementina tells us.

What to Do Pre-Appointment
As with most salon treatments, there are some things you need to do in preparation to get the best results. Clementina says “You need to come in with clean brows like with eyelash extensions. A clean base is needed for the best hold.” Grooming your brows is also a good idea; “If you have very overgrown eyebrows, it’s best to get them waxed and cut prior to coming in.”

How to Care for Your Brow Extensions
The longevity of your brow extensions is completely dependent on the aftercare; the better you care for them, the longer they will last. This means you need to follow Clementina’s guidelines…
The first 48 hours: “Do not get your brows wet for the first 48 hours. Avoid rubbing your eyes, using oil-based products and heavy creams around eyes, and try not to touch them. Avoid applying makeup over them and only dab the area with water using a damp cloth.”
Don’t touch your brow extensions (Period): “Do not apply makeup to your brow extensions or brush them. You need to be very gentle with brow extensions and try your best to avoid touching them. Many of the strands are attached directly on the skin, so fussing with them will cause them to shed sooner.”
What to avoid: “Anything oil-based [like an oil-based cleanser] should be avoided. Also, avoid wetting the area if you can. Brow extensions that are placed on the actual existing hairs hold much longer than anything attached to the skin. Try your best to avoid rubbing the area or sleeping on them as this will cause them to shed prematurely.”

How to Find a Brow Extension Expert
When it comes to finding a good salon for any treatment, Clementina reminds us: “Safety should be your number one concern. Finding someone who is certified to apply brow extensions is a must. Depending on the state, the stylist also needs to be licensed, not just certified. Do your homework, it’s super important!” So, look online, look at before and after pictures, and always read the reviews.
