We're Saying #RIP To These Beauty Trends In 2023

Beauty News

Whenever December rolls around, like so many, we reflect on everything that’s happened that year, and in the beauty industry, well, there’s been a lot. We’ve seen maximalist makeup re-enter the chat alongside bleached brows, tons of glitter, and more TikTok trends than we can count. The beauty industries delved deeper into the themes of self-love and acceptance, which have radiated through beauty launches, campaigns, and even formulas. On a more practical wavelength, the realities of the post-pandemic era have come into play and will continue into 2023. Basically, a lot of shizz went down.

After this reflection, we like to do a little roundup of trends that we think will die out and predict what’s coming next. Without sounding braggy, over the years, we’ve been pretty spot on, so keep reading if you want a peak into the Huda Beauty crystal ball. All we’re saying is the sun has set on these five trends… #RIP.

RIP: 20-Step Makeup Routine, HELLO: Effortless, Easy Glam

Pre-pandemic, we would spend TIME on our beat – we wanted it to be flawless, which is somewhat ironic since we’ve scraped that very word from our beauty vocabulary… we digress! We’d prime and prep our skin, buff in our foundation, layer concealer, cream contour, set with powder, bake, powder blush, then spend at least ten minutes perfecting our brows, and that doesn’t even begin to cover our eyeshadow, liner or lip combo. Our makeup routine would regularly consist of twenty steps that would take us… honestly? 30 minutes on a good day and 45 for full glam. #SorryNotSorry

But as we enter our post-pandemic era, that’s all changed. Throughout 2023 expect multi-tasking, easy-to-wear, and even easier-to-apply beauty to consolidate its reign. Skin and lip tints will live in the limelight, and we’re not mad. We want our glam to look effortless and allow our natural beauty to shine through. But don’t get it twisted; we’re not abandoning full glam altogether – you’ll still catch us at an event with a beat laid with the utmost precision, but on those regular days, we’ll keep it minimal with multi-tasking sticks, natural brows, and a few coats of mascara.

RIP: Non-Inclusive Beauty Brands

2023 has no time for non-inclusive beauty brands. Just look at the comments section on trendmood and you’ll get the picture VERY quickly. If you don’t have a shade range that reflects the beautiful skin tones we see in the world, the beauty community just won’t stand for it anymore. Plain and simple.

RIP: 14-Step Skincare Routine, HELLO: Simplified Skincare

You’ll notice a trend here… In 2023, we’re not just stripping back our makeup routine but our skincare regimen too. Gone are the days of 14-step skincare routines. The truth is, we realized we don’t need to use a toner, essence, two serums, moisturizer, and a face oil, and neither do you. Don’t get us wrong, we still will on self-care Sundays, but on the day-to-day, we’re simplifying with multitasking, 2-in-1 formulas, and our morning routine, and our glow is reaping the rewards.

And tbh, with the current climate and economic crisis (depressing, we know), not only are we reducing waste by opting for a simplified routine, but we don’t have the dollar to throw away on unnecessary steps. And look, it’s still fine to do all these steps if that’s what works for you, but if you skip some steps on some days, at least you’re stretching your products a little bit further.

A four-step morning routine (cleanser, serum, moisturizer, SPF) and a five-step evening routine (double cleanse, toner, serum, moisturizer, face oil) is plenty. Trust us; your skin and your daily routine will thank you. Extra zzzs, anyone?

RIP: Overstyling Hair, HELLO: Hair Health

When we think back to our daily hairstylin’ routine, we feel a lil’ guilty. We put our hair through SO much – heat, hairspray, pulling, tugging. Well, not in 2023. Instead, hair health and hair love is re-entering the chat. Over the past two years, we’ve seen a rise of non-heat-styling hacks, hair-loving trends (think #maskbun and #hairslugging), not to mention so much natural hair love (side note: if you haven’t seen Tracee Ellis Ross’ docuseries Hair Tales, get on it now!). This will combine and peak in 2023, and your scalp and tresses will tell that story.

Speaking of your scalp, expect to pay more attention to it than ever before. According to Pinterest, ‘scalp massage technique‘ searches are up 55%, and ‘natural hair masks for growth’ have risen by 80%. People are looking for natural techniques to nourish their tresses, and the good news is, there’s a ton out there. A word of advice? Follow suit, and by the time we write up the 2024 trend report (that thought is kinda scary), your hair will be shinier, bouncier, and healthier.

RIP: Major Procedures, HELLO: Subtle Enhancements

@momuhneeee_ 💅🏽 we love a smooth forehead #dysport #botox #botoxnatural thank you @SNAPGLAMmedspa ♬ Hey Sexy Lady [Feat. Brian & Tony Gold] – Shaggy

We’ve all lived and are still living on Zoom, so let’s not kid ourselves; when we’re on a call, we rarely look at our colleagues. Our eyes are glued to our own reflection #guilty. As a result, we’re more aware of our appearance, leading many of us who would have never even considered the needle to think… “maybe a little here or something there.” Combine this with celeb confessionals –AKA many celebs finally admitting they get natural work done – and the rise of subtle surgical procedures that give great results with no downtime, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a subtle enhancements-boom in 2023.

The truth/irony is, the world is favoring a much more natural vibe, and that’s reflected even in surgical trends. We’ll begin to see more laser and non-surgical face lifts, and micro-filler and baby botox that replaces excessively-filled lips and traditional facelifts.

Our one piece of advice? Whatever type of procedure you decide to explore, ask if you are doing it for yourself. If it empowers you and fuels your self-confidence, then we support it 100%. Just be aware that many of these new trending procedures are temporary and require upkeep.
