The 90s returned in full swing earlier this year when Netflix announced that it was bringing ‘Friends’ back into our lives. The hilarious sitcom that shaped our younger years and made us cry, laugh, and cry laughing has some of the most memorable quotes from any TV show, EVER. Although it takes a few viewings to fully grasp the hilarity of the characters’ conversations (which is fine because we’ve already watched all ten seasons twice this year) there are some standout comments that are just so relatable to our every day lives. Here are 10 of our favorite quotes that really do make so much sense – we’ll call this one ‘The One With All The Friends Quotes.’

1. Leaving the house is not compulsory.

We all get that urge during the work week to get glammed up and let our hair down with the girls, but as the weekend arrives, without fail, Netflix, pizza and face masks on the sofa start sounding way better. Thinking up new excuses as to why you can’t come out to play can be exhausting, so take a page out of Phoebe’s book and just say no – nicely!

2. Sharing is not caring

“Joey doesn’t share food” and neither do we! Seriously, there’s nothing worse than sitting across from someone at dinner who keeps eyeing up your fries like they’re going extinct. As much as you try to ignore their gaze, you just know they’re going to ask for one. So, you do what any mature adult would do and shove as many in your mouth as you can fit, as quickly as possible – if you wanted them you should have ordered them!

3. Communication is key

When it comes to relationships, communication is everything. In Friends, it’s was a romantic misunderstanding that led to major drama, but IRL, you need to make sure you’re both on the same page in every relationship – whether it’s with your coworker, best friend, or sibling. Communication and understanding can save you a whole lot of trouble, and in this instance, a whole lot of heartache.

4. Be whatever you want to be

via Giphy

Sometimes we get told so often who and what we are by others, that sometimes we start to believe it ourselves. Whether you’ve been stuck in the same role at work for too long or feel under pressure from your family to follow a certain career path or lifestyle, never let anyone define who you are. You can be and do anything you want – positive thinking is everything, so believe in yourself, and start making small steps to go wherever you want to go. If you want to be a purse, then be a damned purse!

5. Taking an Insta-worthy snap isn’t always easy

We’ve all experienced the woes when your hair looks 10/10, your makeup is flawless, your outfit is on point and you just cannot get a good selfie. You’re working your angles harder than a protractor, looking at the camera, looking down, flipping your hair, running to the windows for that perfect lighting, but the queen in the mirror just won’t show up on the screen. But remember, even if you don’t get the perfect selfie, at least you know your girls will be on hand to make sure you get the perfect candid shot.

6. Sometimes the fewer words you use, the more you say.

Saying the words “I’m fine,” can mean a number of different things. It can be quite difficult to say how you really feel sometimes so these six letters are just easier. It’s our job as humans to make sure that if someone has something to get off their chest (probably if they say I’m fine), that we’re ready to listen so that the next time they say “I’m fine,” they really mean it.

7. The rules of feminism are unbreakable.

We’re all about girl power and let’s be real, being a woman isn’t always easy. There are quite a few things in life that only a woman would really understand, like period pains, bikini waxes, and under-boob sweat. So, while we’ll happily take each other’s views on these subjects, unless you’ve got the girl parts, keep it shut!

 8. You should always be yourself, no matter what…

If there’s one thing everyone would agree on about Phoebe Buffet, it’s that she’s always true to herself and she never conforms to the norm. Take running through Central Park, for example, she runs in her own unique way – okay, very unique – but does she care? Nope. Take notes from Phoebe and always be yourself, as long as it makes you happy (and doesn’t negatively impact anyone else!), it’s totally worth it.

9. When it comes to fake tanning you need to be careful… really careful

via Giphy

When it comes to achieving that coveted golden glow, for some people it’s a lot harder to achieve than others. Case and point, Ross Gellar. Learn from his mistakes, and when you are faking it with some faux tan, be careful and build up your tan gradually. Equally, listen carefully to instructions and never assume you know better, especially when it comes to beauty related concerns… Check out our guide to flawless fake tanning here.

10. At the end of the day, good friends can fix basically everything

If there’s one lesson we should all take away from Friends, it’s to never underestimate or under-appreciate your squad. No matter what drama you’re dealing with, whether you’re a runaway bride, you’re broke AF or you accidentally get a turkey stuck on your head, your friends will be there for you. No matter what you’re facing, a problem shared with your friends will always be less daunting once you’ve discussed it with your besties.
