If you’re currently experiencing a series of bad hair days, don’t worry you’re not the only one! Despite the lack of heat styling in your current routine, lockdown is still accompanied by its fair share of hair woes… Not only are you unable to get regular trims, which can lead to dry, brittle strands but a rise in stress levels partnered with a lack of washing increases the likelihood of dandruff and an overall unhealthy scalp. The best solution? Regular hair treatments to clarify and detox the scalp, as well as hydrating masks to lock in moisture and add shine. Here are three drugstore formulas that address all of the above (and more) leaving your lockdown mane healthy, shiny, and dandruff-free!

To Cleanse & Reset Your Scalp: Bioderma Nodé, $10

Bioderma Node ShampooSource: Bioderma

Finding a good shampoo is essential if you want to maintain a happy and healthy scalp, and the Bioderma Nodé range provides two great options, especially if you’ve been experiencing dandruff or an itchy scalp while in isolation. The Nodé A, $10, and the Nodé Fluid, $10, both use a gentle cleansing base, which was developed in accordance with the concept of non-detergence. The base features a unique combination of surfactants to gently cleanse the scalp without disrupting the hydrolipidic film. The key difference in the formulation is the Nodé A contains a D-Panthenol agent to soothe the scalp and reduce flakiness or itchiness, making it ideal for sensitive scalps. Whereas, the Node Fluid contains antistatic agents to bring back shine and suppleness to the hair.

Application tip: To maximize the benefits, lather the formula with warm water and let it sit on your scalp for one to two minutes. Use daily and follow with your favorite conditioner.

To Detox & Clarify: Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse, $5

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of nature’s most potent creations that can help with a plethora of beauty issues. In fact, it’s been used as a medicinal and beautifying ingredient for thousands of years due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties.

Whether you’re dealing with a dry scalp, oil build-up or dandruff, a quick apple cider vinegar rinse can work wonders. The antifungal properties will help restore your skin’s natural pH balance reducing the likelihood of dandruff and irritation while simultaneously clarifying blocked pores and hair follicles. Whenever our hair is getting greasier than usual, we use this rinse and it instantly fixes the problem!

The most important rule of ACV is to find a raw, organic formula with ‘Mother.’ The Mother we’re referring to isn’t a maternal figure, but the cloudy substance found in some kinds of vinegar that’s rich in proteins, healthy bacteria, and acids, all of which maximize the aforementioned beauty properties.

Our fave ACV Rinse: To make our go-to rinse, mix equal parts ACV and water (roughly one cup of each) – you can also add three drops of tea tree oil if you have it, which is another great detoxifying agent. Pour the rinse onto your scalp and hair and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing and shampooing as usual. You can also use a more diluted solution (one-part ACV and three parts water), and use it at the end of your washing routine for major shine – although beware, it can smell so test this while you’re in isolation!

To Replenish & Hydrate: Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque, $14

shea moistureSource: Shea Moisture

Jamaican Black Castor Oil is one of our go-to haircare ingredients as it hydrates, strengthens, and restores even the most brittle hair, including chemically-treated hair. The mask not only features our haircare hero but the formula also boasts shea butter; known for its moisturizing, hair-smoothing properties. Shea butter is also loaded with omegas that reduce breakage and promote healthy hair growth. As an added bonus, peppermint extract invigorates the scalp and boosts blood circulation, thereby increasing absorption. In short, if your hair is feeling dry or damaged, regardless of your hair type (it’s suitable for straight to kinky locks) this mask should be your go-to.

How to use: After shampooing, apply a generous amount from root to tip, then comb it through to ensure the masks coats each hair strand. Wrap your hair in a plastic cap or an old cotton T-Shirt and let it sit for 30 minutes. To intensify the treatment, sit under a warm dryer for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
