Flaky, itchy post-winter skin is one of the worst side effects of the season, but dry, brittle locks? Even more of a tragedy. Harsh weather and heat blasting indoors can all wreak havoc on your mane, but according to Naté Bova, Senior Stylist at Warren Tricomi Salon, another issue is cold air pulling the moisture from the strands, which causes dryness and slightly lifts the hair’s cuticle (AKA outer layer). “These conditions dehydrate the scalp resulting in brittle strands, leading to excessive heat styling and flat ironing, damaging your hair even further,” he explains.

To reverse these hairrowing problems (see what we did there?) Bova suggests switching up your shampoo and conditioner to a more moisturizing formula, as well as using a light leave-in conditioner before styling. “Washing less often is also the key to maintaining your hair’s moisture,” he says. But when you do, be sure to detangle when you’re still in the shower with a wide-tooth comb before rinsing.

And if you need a little more help getting things back on track, we’ve got your back with these stylist-approved treatments and products, plus an easy DIY you can make at home:

1. THE ULTIMATE FIX: Milbon Restorative Treatment (Price Varies at Salons):

If your hair is at the point of no return — damage wise — then ask your stylist or colorist about trying a professional Milbon treatment. This is basically a deep conditioning treatment on steroids (thanks to ingredients like SSVR-Silk, CMADK, and Hydrolyzed Keratins) and only has to be left in for about 15 minutes or so to do its thing. Plus, when you combine it with Milbon’s home-care Repair Collection (which consists of shampoo, conditioner, and a leave-in), you’ll be back to a flawless coif in no time. Learn more here.

2. THE MEGA-MASK: The Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Reparative Hair Mask, $25:

When dealing with dehydrated, under-nourished cuticles, Bova recommends a weekly application of this Kiehl’s mask. Inspired by traditional home recipes, this reparative masque provides intense conditioning, helping to heal severely weakened hair fibers by restoring their moisture content. “It’s also ideal for a weakened mane that’s been overexposed to the sun, chemical-processing, or excessive heat styling,” he adds. Shop it here.

3. THE LEAVE-IN RESCUE CREAM: L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Inforcer Anti-Breakage Cream, $26:

Limp, lifeless locks are in need of strengthening products, and this anti-breakage cream is here to help. Since it contains Vitamin B6 and Biotin, it will get your tresses in tip-top shape, restoring the proteins and lipids that have been compromised from the aforementioned factors. It will also reduce breakage and make detangling a breeze. Shop it here.

4. THE ON-THE-GO STRENGTHENER Neway Japan Nano Amino Design Repair Mist, $28:

In addition to masking at home and in-salon treatments, it’s also important to switch to products that will make a difference. Bova likes this powerful leave-in conditioning spray that mends damaged ends using lambswool protein. Extra bonus: There’s also a styling agent in the ingredients so you’ll achieve volume and texture at the same time. Shop it here.

5. THE LONG-TERM SAVIOR: Viviscal Extra Strength Hair Vitamin Supplements, $50:

Everyone will suffer from hair damage at some point in their lives, but Celebrity Stylist Jennifer Yepez’s go-to cure is dietary supplements. “Not only do supplements work to improve current hair damage, but prevent any more from happening in the future,” she says. After getting a terrible cut of her own, she was forced to put in extensions breaking her real hair even more, but after taking Viviscal’s supplements every day for three months, she saw what she calls a huge difference. THE SUPER EASY DIY TREATMENT: Egg, Avocado, and Olive Oil Hair Mask

If you prefer to handle matters in your own hands, Bova likes to whip up this DIY mask because avocado is rich in fatty acids, making it very moisturizing for your hair. To make it you’ll need: Two egg yolks, two teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil, and half of a ripe avocado. Mash the avocado and mix in the egg yolk, then coat hair, cover with a shower cap, and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and proceed to shampoo and condition as usual. Don’t forget a heat protection spray, leave in conditioner or hair oil if you’re using any heat!
