If there’s just one new hue you introduce into your makeup wardrobe this year, we argue that it should be bold and unapologetic blue. Not just because Pantone named “classic blue” it’s color of the year, and not just because we’ve seen striking looks on the runway, but because stepping outside of your comfort zone (even if you’re just toeing the line) can make you feel that much more alive. So put down the neutral nudes, settle down with the champagne shimmer, forget the peachy pinks and – just for a second – embrace the blue.

A Splash of Mascara

The Look: Baby steps, babe. A swipe of blue mascara on the tips of your lashes is subtle enough to not elicit stares as you saunter down the sidewalk, but still adds just enough pizazz to your whole look. We recommend layering the blue on top of your black for a low-key pop, or you can apply a white primer first followed by the blue mascara for a bit more drama, like the above!

A Clean Liquid Liner

The Look: Another way to start small with your blue beauty goals is to opt for a sharply drawn liquid liner cat-eye. “I recommend applying the blue liner like you would normally do your black wing – nice and clean. That way it looks killer and still has that colorful edge,” says Tarryn Feldman, celebrity makeup artist.”

A Little Smudge

The Look: If you’re not much of a liquid eyeliner girl, no sweat. You can achieve a similar “just casually wearing a little blue today” vibe with a smudged out classic pencil liner, says Feldman. You could even spice things up by applying the liner underneath your eye instead of on the lid. Go wild.

A Crisp Lip

The Look: There’s no harm in straying from your MLBB (that’s my lips but better for the non-Gen-Z) lippie for a day, especially if that means you’re making a loud statement with a true blue hue. The key to pulling off this look is impeccable application. Use a lip liner brush to get crisp lines.

A Soft and Smoky Lid

The Look: When you’re really itching for a blue look that turns eyes, Feldman says to go big with a blue smoky eye. “Start with your eye primer so the shadow is true to color and stays in place, then apply your shadow,” she says. “Next, blend out the lid with a crease brush loaded up with either a light blue shade or the same you just used.” Make no apologies about the blast of color that’s about to grace your face.

The Product: Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Sapphire, $27

A Sharp, Graphic Eye

The Look: You can take one step beyond a soft and smoky eye with a richly pigmented graphic look. This requires precision and patience, so make sure you’re working with a primed lid and your best (cleanest) cosmetic brushes. Feel free to play with shapes, and remember that there’s no shame in starting over.

The Product: INC.redible Lid Slick Eye Pigment in Dose of Ego, $10
