Empowerment

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we wanted to make you feel like the strongest, most empowered version of yourself so you could go out and kick some serious ass! While we’re ALL about being each other’s cheerleaders (genuinely, you go Glen Coco gurl), the most important person you need to empower is yourself. There’s literally no greater feeling than feeeeeling yourself and acknowledging the badass bawse you are! But don’t get us wrong, we don’t always wake up feeling like Wonder Woman, so whenever we are feeling a little drained of our fiery female spirit, we do one of these five things – they’re super simple, but trust us, they work.

1. Practice self-love and positive affirmations

Self-love is so simple, yet SO impactful. Without trying to sound too preachy, go and take a look in the mirror and remind yourself; you’re powerful, you’re strong, and you’re beautiful. Practicing self-love is scientifically proven to increase positivity and make you a happier, more confident, and most importantly, more empowered person. In a recent study by Psychology Today, self-love was said to improve mental strength and productivity and also decrease depression.

Practice self-love in the morning to kickstart your day with positivity. Simply list three things you like about yourself and three things you’re thankful for. It doesn’t have to be a physical attribute or monotal item; it could be your hilarious sense of humor or your relationship with your bestie. Check out this post for five other things to do in the morning, to have the best day ever.

2. Try something new

Sometimes it can feel like our life is a series of routines; our skin routine, our office routine, our workout routine… You get the idea. The problem is with so much of our daily life scheduled, we rarely get pushed outside our comfort zone. Although engaging in a new activity may seem like NBD, the exhilaration from trying something different will release feel-good endorphins in your brain. Plus, when you finish the activity, you feel a sense of accomplishment, which will instantly make you feel empowered. In a recent study by the NIH, they concluded that trying new activities weekly boosted positivity and self-worth. Whether it’s trying out a new workout class or getting a Brazilian (ouch), try and do something that’s a little different at least once a week.

3. Rock a bold lip

Since we’re certified beauty fanatics, we couldn’t forget to mention the empowering effect of a bold lip. We like to think of a power lip as our version of the power suit; our armor to face the world. Although don’t get us wrong, we’ll totally slay a power suit, we’ll just team it with a saucy lip for some extra sass. Whether it’s a deep berry or a classic red, a recent study proved that a bold lip will give you a surge of confidence. In another study by Sally Hansen, it revealed that 84% of women said that beauty is empowering – you can’t argue with those facts! For our top tips on slaying a strong lip color, read this post.

4. Schedule in some me time

Whenever we’re feeling a little drained, we schedule in some serious me time. Even if it’s just a couple of hours, invest some time in making yourself feel fierce and empowered. Our usual feel-good recipe is Ariana, face mask, and some killer lingerie, which typically equals a dance party! In fact, people who spend more time naked are said to feel more confident in their own skin. Oh, and take this time to detox from technology: a recent study revealed that 90% of young Brits were most likely to associate Instagram with low self-esteem. The answer is simple – turn it off!

Or, if you’re feeling boujee why not treat yo’self and buy something new – financial empowerment is a thing, and Ariana majorly endorses that. You worked hard to earn that dollar, so don’t forget to show yourself some love. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, just something you’ll enjoy. 5. Be inspired by your feminist heroes

Whoever coined the phrase “empowered women, empower women” was speaking one of the realest truths of all time. So, the next time you feel like you need a little boost or a reminder that you’re capable of anything, turn to your feminist heroes for guidance. Our faves include Michelle Obama, Yara Shahidi, and Amy Schumer. Check out these strong women who give us major confidence goals.

Whether you have a scroll through these inspiring women’s Instagram feeds or read some #girlboss quotes, listen to a podcast or blast your ultimate feminist anthem, do whatever it takes to give you that surge of energy. If you have a spare twenty minutes, watch Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie’s Ted Talk “We should all be feminists.” Chances are, you’ve actually already heard an exert of this Ted Talk in Beyoncé’s song Flawless. If you don’t have the time, it’s always a good idea to listen to some Beyoncé.

Spread some love and share this with your #girlgang, and don’t forget to let us know what makes YOU feel empowered in the comments below.
