Any true makeup addict has a folder saved ‘Makeup Inspo’ on their Instagram account. And if you look at any of the celeb makeup looks in our coveted folder, you’ll notice one common trend: Monochromatic makeup. By that we mean makeup looks that use one color to accent the face, from the lips to the cheeks to the eyes, to create a harmonious look: it’s an MUA secret and a major trend RN. Here’s everything you need to know about 2020s biggest makeup trend:

How To Create A Monochromatic Makeup Look

Monochromatic makeup is created by using the same color theme for your entire look, including your eyes, cheeks, and lips. For instance, if you’re wearing a tangy coral lip, use this color theme to accent your lips and cheeks too – team it with a warm orange eyeshadow and a burnt copper bronzer. For a fresh monochromatic makeup vibe, start with a rosy blush, followed by a soft pink shadow, and finished with a berry lip. It will help you create a harmonious, cohesive look, just like the glam you see on Instagram. It’s easily achieved but it instantly elevates your look.

Of course, there’ll be times when creating a monochromatic makeup look is more difficult as you can’t always use the same lip, cheek, and eye color. Like if you’re wearing a warm green eyeshadow (see Lizzo, pictured below), you wouldn’t apply a green lipstick or blusher. In this case, focus on creating a harmonious makeup look with a blush and lip color that complement the bolder shade. Here, Lizzo has opted for warm peach blush with golden undertones and a soft, peachy-toned lip.

If you’re wearing a brown nude lip like our Power Bullet Matte Lipstick in Board Meeting $25, try a cool-toned blush with muted brown undertones like NARS Luster, $30, paired with a matte brown eyeshadow.

To make it extra easy, celebrity MUA Patrick Ta who works with goddesses Gigi Hadid and Adriana Lima, created an entire makeup collection dedicated to the monochromatic mantra, which includes four sets of Lip Cremes, lip liners and Velvet Blushes in complementary shades to create a truly harmonious look.

Now you know how to create a monochromatic makeup look, here’s some MAJOR inspo…
