Getting a nose job is kind of a big deal! Not only is it expensive and can take months to heal – perhaps even a year depending on the type of rhinoplasty – but it’s also irreversible without another operation if you’re unhappy with the results. However, over the last few years a new procedure, called the non-surgical nose job, has risen in popularity, and we can see why. California-based Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr.Kay says “The non-surgical rhinoplasty is a great alternative to surgical rhinoplasties that requires no downtime or anesthesia,” and we really like the sound of that!

The non-surgical nose job, aka a liquid rhinoplasty, uses filler to alter the nose shape, and Dr. Kay says “So many patients love the way this non-surgical treatment can correct irregularities of the nose, such as dorsal humps and nasal tip drooping without ever having to go to surgery.”

We asked Dr. Kay, who is famous for her ‘Tinkerbell Tip Lift’ technique that subtly raises the tip of the nose, to talk us through how a non-surgical nose job works, how long it lasts, and everything else you need to know.

What Is a Non-Surgical Nose Job?

A non-surgical nose job is a procedure that involves injecting hyaluronic acid fillers into the nose to temporarily alter the shape of the nose. Essentially, the filler helps to smooth and fill bumps or irregularities in the nose, but what’s crazy is that the nose always appears to look smaller, not just straighter. The results are also instant!

When it comes to liquid rhinoplasties, Dr. Kay says “My overall goal is to correct and shape the nose in a manner that complements a patient’s other facial features.”

Dr. Kay tells us that a lot of her patients come to her via her Instagram page because they want to try her signature “Tinkerbell Tip Lift” technique. Dr. Kay explains that the technique is used “To sculpt and refine the cartilage support of the nose. This creates an elegant uplift and beautiful tip projection. It is so popular amongst my model clients and beauties.” She also points out, “Not everyone will have a hump or bumps that they need corrected. Many patients seek out this procedure to create a more lifted, feminine tip without the hassle of surgery.”

How Long Does A Non-Surgical Nose Job Last?

Dr. Kay tells us that the results typically last 12-18 months depending on the patient and product that is used.

How Much Does a Non-Surgical Nose Job Cost?

According to Dr. Kay “The cost of the non-surgical rhinoplasty is typically $1,900 and will include both the initial visit and follow-up.” She adds that “Anytime I see a patient for this treatment, I ask that they come back within four weeks for a complimentary touch-up. I think incorporating this into the treatment plan has really set me apart from some of the other physicians and med-spas that offer this. Once the swelling goes down, I’m able to take a closer look and see what areas could use further refinement. I assess the settlement of the filler and if needed, I may inject a bit more filler into the nose.”

“Prior to injecting, I will discuss with the patient how the procedure works, possible adverse reactions, and confirm that they are in the right headspace. Once we have decided to move forward, one of my assistants will take photos and apply a topical numbing cream,” Dr. Kay says.

Once the numbing cream has worked its magic, the area will be cleaned with alcohol and the injection process will begin. There is little to no downtime, with usually just a little minor bruising or swelling.

Does a Non-Surgical Nose Job Hurt?

In comparison to a surgical rhinoplasty, the non-surgical nose job is barely a scratch and is generally no more painful than lip fillers. Dr. Kay says, “I use an extra-strength topical numbing cream to ensure every patient experiences as little discomfort as possible. While the filler does contain lidocaine [numbing medication], injecting some areas of the face can be sensitive. Patients typically numb for about 30 to 45 minutes.”

Is Everyone a Candidate for The Non-Surgical Nose Job?

“Most patients will be acceptable candidates for this procedure but anyone suffering from breathing issues or a deviated septum won’t see a correction from the non-surgical method,” Dr. Kay says. She also believes that it’s always best to have a consultation in-person first before you decide which type of nose job you should go for, adding that, “If I believe that a patient is better suited for a surgical rhinoplasty, I will have them meet with my Surgical Coordinator.”

Are There Any Risks With a Non-Surgical Nose Job?

As with many cosmetic procedures, there are always risks involved, and the same goes for the non-surgical nose job. Dr. Kay says, “If an injector is just starting out or lacks a demonstrated knowledge of the facial anatomy, the opportunity for adverse reactions like blindness and necrosis immediately increases.” Dr. Kay says that she advises everyone to ensure their injector has had the proper training and has an ABPS (American Board of Plastic Surgery) certification, and suggests to “Always research a procedure and a provider before moving forward with a procedure.”

Choose Your Surgeon Wisely

When it comes to changing anything on your face, the goal is to always balance facial symmetry and proportions. Dr. Kay says, “At times, a patient might see better results when combining this procedure with filler in the chin or along the cheeks and jawline.”

It’s important to work with an experienced plastic surgeon who understands what you are trying to achieve and knows the facial structure well. Dr. Kay explains “Every patient is different and my knowledge of the facial anatomy has allowed me to harmonize the facial features of countless patients. Part of being an injector incorporates some level of artistry. By looking at things from the point-of-view of an artist, it definitely allows me to produce some beautiful outcomes for my patients.”
