We Tried Benefit’s New Optical Blur Foundation...

Benefit Hello Happy FoundationIf there’s one product I’m obsessed with, aside from lipstick, I’d probably have to say foundation. There’s just something about using the perfect foundation that can totally transform your mood. The thing is, what works for one person can be completely different for another, so the fact that there are always new foundations launching is essential. The latest launch is Benefit Cosmetics’ super cute Hello Happy Soft Blur Foundation, $29, a lightweight foundation designed to blur out imperfections and look natural. I’m usually more of a full coverage-kinda girl, but I love Benefit, so of course, I had to give this a go.

What it is: A lightweight foundation with soft focus-optical blurring spheres that give a smooth, natural-matte finish. The coverage is light-to-medium, and it also has SPF 15. The collection comes in 12 shades: three light shades, five medium-to-tan shades, and four deep shades. Although there are only 12 shades, the range is good, and Benefit say that they’re all made with neutral undertones, so they each stretch to fit six tones.

What we liked: This kind of reminds me of a cross between a tinted moisturizer and a lightweight foundation, as the texture is very thin. It’s easy to apply because of the fluid consistency; I used a densely packed brush (our Huda Beauty Buff & Blend Brush) to blend it out, which looked nice and gave light coverage. It blurred my imperfections, but I have to say I’m quite happy with my skin at the moment (I have no breakouts, and I’ve faded scarring with my red light device) so I didn’t have a lot I needed to cover at this point. I did manage to build this to medium coverage, although I don’t think you could ever get full coverage with this. I was really happy with how this made my skin look; just luminous and super healthy – it was very natural and pretty.

What we didn’t like: I liked the finish, but because it looked so natural I decided not to set it with a powder, but the problem was the foundation never really set, and over the next few hours it moved a lot. I did struggle to find a shade and ended up mixing shade 7 and 8 – I felt it looked a little beige for me and I would typically prefer a more golden tone, but this worked okay.

My tips:

  • If you’re going to build this, I think it definitely needs to be set with a light dusting of setting powder, and if you have pores, use a silicone primer to smooth out your skin: Benefit recommend using their POREfessional primer first.
  • For a super natural finish, either blend with your fingers or a makeup sponge.
  • For fuller coverage, use a densely packed foundation brush and continue to build with a sponge.
  • I recommend going to the store to find your shade if you can.

My verdict: I think if you have good skin, you’re going to LOVE this – it’s everything you need to just blur away light imperfections and even skin tone. I often break out, and although this is buildable, I don’t feel like this is a foundation I would go for on those weeks. For me, this is the kind of foundation I’d wear at the weekends while running errands.
