The jade roller has basically become a backstage essential at fashion weeks and a necessity in models’ and makeup artists’ kits for its lifting and contouring effects. They’re perfect to use with your moisturizing products in the morning and at night – they’ll even help you fake a good night’s sleep. Yet, despite the current buzz, it’s actually a beauty tool that’s been around for centuries.

“It’s thought that jade helps with negativity and gives good vibes. Since it’s very hard and not very porous, it stays cool.” says Dr. Purvisha Patel, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Visha Skincare.
Stemming from mines in Asia, the hyped-about gem is mostly used on the face with special attention being paid to the under eye area. The best way to use one is to roll it from the center to the edge of the face, which will help reduce puffiness. For the neck, it should be rolled up and down, which promotes lymphatic flow and tones the underlying muscles, according to Dr. Patel.

- Before beginning your rolling session, apply your serum or moisturizer of choice. This will allow for deeper penetration of your topical products.
- It’s also recommended to place your jade roller in an ice bath before use to boost the effects, as jade holds the temperature. Use this method during your morning beauty routine to address puffiness and soften dark circles under the eyes.
- Lastly, using alternating applications of hot and cold with your jade roller will plump up dull skin. Make sure to end your session with a cold application to help close pores and seal in any skin care products. Make sure you always roll on a clean face!
