90s hair trends are having a serious resurgence RN – we’re seeing them everywhere from the red carpet to our Instagram feed. The latest 90s hairstyle to make a comeback is the schoolgirl staple: pigtails. Among the many celebs trying the trend, in the last week alone we saw Ariana Grande and Hailey Bieber sporting the trend, adding their own touch to the playful hairstyle.

And we standby its new-found popularity; it’s super cute, easy to achieve, and is in fact, more versatile than you may think. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to work multiple trends, like face-framing tendrils a la Addison Rae or up-turned ends like Ariana Grande. Here’s how the It girls are working the trend…

Whether you’re opting for a full-glam feel like J.Lo or are simply looking for a cute WFH option, pigtails are the perfect trend to experiment with. The only element that should remain the same (if you want to stay on-trend) is the positioning of the pigtails. They should be styled high for a snatched, sexy vibe.

Keep it classic like Hailey and style your pigtails with clean edges and a center parting. The simplicity adds a chic yet modern vibe. We’ll be styling this half-up, half-down look with barely-there makeup for our next zoom meeting

Face-framing tendrils are yet another 90s trend that ALL of the it girls are obsessed with. Case in point: Founder of KNC Beauty, Kristen Noel Crawley. Note how she’s wrapped her hair around each pigtail for a polished final look? This is one of our favorite hair hacks – start by securing the ponytail, then take a small section of hair from the base of the pigtail and wrap it around the hair tie. Secure with a bobby pin, et voila!

As soon as we saw Ariana Grande trade in her signature ponytail for pigtails, we knew it was a major trend. The upturned ends teamed with a sleek side parting add a sassy vibe. We’re obsessed!

When we said 90s hair trends are making a comeback, we weren’t kidding. Even butterfly clips are making a name for themselves as demonstrated on WAP Queen Megan Thee Stallion. The colorful embellishment is the ultimate final touch.

Regardless of your hair type or texture, whether you have straight locks or curly tresses, you can find a way to embrace this trend. With that said, if you do want to incorporate some length and volume to your pigtails, experiment with extension pieces. The easiest method is by using two ponytail extensions pieces. We love the Bellami Faux Wrap Ponytail, $50, they’re really easy to use and are available in a variety of colors. Alternatively, if you have kinky, coily, or curly locks, Kinky Curly Yaki offers a range of drawstring ponytail options.

Once again, take note from TikTok star Addison Rae who has wrapped the base of her pigtails using her tresses to elevate the look. The added thickness of the hair wrap exaggerates the technique, and we’re low key obsessed.
