Save Yourself $500 With This 5-Minute Hair Curling Hack

Hacks

From the very second the Dyson Airwrap dropped, the beauty industry has been losing its mind over the innovative AF hair drying, curling-iron hybrid, which dries your hair while curling it to cut styling time in half!  When it came up on our Instagram feed we couldn’t believe our eyes, it literally looked like a hair styling device from the future, at the very least outer space! The only thing that stopped us from instantly adding it our cart was the price tag: it costs $549. And while we understand that it’s the most innovative tool the hair styling industry has seen in decades, there’s no denying that it’s a lot of money. So when we came across a curling hack that mimics the same drying technique, but you only need a plastic bottle to fulfill your hair dreams (not a month’s rent) we had to give it a go.

The Dyson Airwrap

For those of you who haven’t seen the Dyson Airwrap in action, it uses a new technology, which attracts hair to a long cylinder using a winding mechanism. In simple terms, it sucks in and wraps your hair around the tool, simultaneously drying and curling it, leaving you with big, bouncy curls that look salon fresh.

Just like the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, $399, the Airwrap has a thermostat that measures airflow temperature 20 times a second to ensure the heat never goes above 150°c, lowering the risk of hair damage. There are two curling options for larger, more voluminous curls or smaller curls, as well as a firm smoothing brush, a soft smooth brush, a round brush, and a drying attachment, which you clip onto the cylinder. It’s also super lightweight, easy to use with magnetic attachments, and it doesn’t make the usual deafening buzz of a regular hairdryer.

As we said, it’s undoubtedly one of the most exciting styling tools the hair industry has ever seen, but again, it’s pretty damn expensive. So in an effort to save your $$$, we’re introducing you to the plastic bottle hair curling hack that we’ve started seeing all over the Gram.

The Hair Curling Hack

Honestly, this hack is just as innovative as the dryer itself but doesn’t cost a small fortune. It’s so simple and it looks super effective, we HAD to check it out for ourselves:

Our Step by Step Guide:

All you need is a plastic water bottle and a hair dryer with a nozzle – it’s that simple.

STEP 1: Using a pair of large scissors or a palette knife, cut off the top of the water bottle so that one end is sealed and the other open – this is where you’re going to place your hair.

STEP 2: Down one side of the bottle, cut a rectangular slit that’s 2cm longer than the length of your hairdryer nozzle and 3cm in width. This is where you’re going to insert the hairdryer nozzle, so depending on the size of your nozzle, you can make it bigger if necessary.

STEP 3: Now that the bottle is prepped, take a small section of your hair and twist it gently and then place it in the bottle. Insert the nozzle into the bottle through the rectangular gap. Turn your hair dryer on and leave it in the insert, to blow dry your hair for roughly 30 seconds. But be careful the bottle gets seriously hot so make sure you’re wearing gloves!

STEP 4: Remove the hair from the bottle and spray with hairspray. Do this to the rest of your hair, doing small sections at a time.

Our verdict: It totally works!!! Although we had seen a few videos, we were still slightly skeptical until we saw the curls for ourselves. Obviously, it doesn’t have the hair saving technology as the Dyson Airwrap, or the various brushes and drying options, but it does deliver the same bouncy curls, and possibly even quicker than the Airwrap. We’re sold!!

There’s literally nothing we love more than finding a hack like this! Let us know if you know of any other amazing $$$ saving beauty hacks in the comments below.
