While our summer plans are looking a little different this year, you can still rely on the beauty space to deliver some seriously dope summer trends – even if you won’t be wearing them in Ibiza or at a festival. As always, these summer trends are bright, colorful, and will instantly boost your mood, which is what we all need RN! Whether you’re a die-hard cake face or a no-makeup makeup kinda-gal, there’s a summer trend you’ll love.

1. Brightly Colored Lashes

PSA: Your mascara doesn’t need to black, or even navy blue, it can be any color of the rainbow. Whether you opt for a shade that complements your look or a contrasting, eye-poppin’ hue, colorful lashes add a playful dimension to any look – we’re obsessed!

Get the look: There are two ways to achieve a colored lash look; the first is, of course, a colored mascara. We love the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara in Cobalt Blue, $9, the pigment is really intense and creates a really eye-catching look (no pun intended).

If you don’t have a colored mascara you can fake it with a pair of falsies, some foundation, and a highly-pigmented eyeshadow. Coat the lashes in foundation, then apply the eyeshadow to the false lash, packing on the pigment using a light tapping motion, and apply the lash as usual.

If you have the Huda Beauty Melted Shadows, these also work really well for tinting lashes as the matte liquid eyeshadow is super pigmented and dries down to a flake-proof finish.

2. Stained Lips

Lip stains have been receiving a lot of airtime recently and for good reason! The formulas have been revamped since their heyday in the 90s and we’re now seeing a myriad of options from cheek-and-lip combos, plumping formulas, and our personal fave, oil-stain hybrids. Plus, they’re the ultimate finishing touch to any no-makeup makeup look, which has become our quarantine go-to.

Get the look: One of our all-time favorite lip stains is the Benefit Benetint Cheek and Lip Stain, $30, however, be mindful as a little goes a long way. The Buxom Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain, $22, is another great option. Plus, it has a lip plumping effect for a fuller, juicier pout.

3. Braided Tendrils

Serving up yet another 90s trend: braided tendrils! This look is super cute, and as Margot Robbie demonstrates, it can be slayed at any occasion. Plus, as far as hair trends go, it’s low maintenance AF, which is why we’ll be wearing it all summer long from the beach to the bar.

Get the look: Part your hair in the center, then create one section on the left and another on the right side – switch up the size depending on your preference. Braid each section, then secure with a small elastic band. For an effortless look, skip the elastic and spritz with a long-holding hair spray like the L’Oréal Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hair Spray, $15.

4. Bare Skin and (Faux) Freckles

Over the last two years, the no-makeup makeup trend has dominated the beauty space and now, thanks to quarantine, people are skipping foundation altogether. Instead, the world is taking note from the SS20 runway, and opting for (well-moisturized) bare skin, allowing freckles to take center stage.

Get the look: As you’d expect the most important factor for this trend is skincare prep. Flawless skin starts with a smooth canvas, and gentle exfoliation is the easiest way to get there. Our go-to exfoliator is The WISHFUL Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub, $39, as it instantly brightens your skin for a natural glow. Once you’ve exfoliated it’s time to layer UP on hydration, whether that’s by using a super-hydrating mask like our new WISHFUL Thirst Trap Cocoon Mask, $9, or prepping your skin with serum, moisturizer, and face oil – in that order!

If you haven’t been blessed with freckles, for the ultimate final touch, simply create your own. Freck Beauty’s Freck OG, $22, is quick and easy to use and helps you achieve a natural final look. Alternatively, you can use a thin brush and some brown eyeshadow.

5. Pastel Everything!

Pastels are having their moment in the makeup world: From the red carpet to the runway, 2020 is all about pastels! Our go-to pastel shades? Mint, rose, and lavender, which is why we created our Huda Beauty Pastel Obsessions Eyeshadow Palettes, $29, in those exact shades!

Get the look: When it comes to pastels, there are SO many ways to work the trend. First and foremost, to make pastels pop, use a light-colored concealer as a base. Then to add dimension to your look, use different color gradients. And of course, don’t be afraid to match your shadow to your outfit for a seriously cute look. 6. Monochromatic, Dramatic Blush

There’s no doubt about it, blush is 2020’s biggest makeup trend. However, this summer it’s reached new levels of intensity. Long gone are the days of a soft wash of color, and in its place are highly pigmented stained cheeks. The blush placement has also intensified – product application is no longer limited to the apples of the cheeks but extended up towards the tail of the brow where it meets a wash of eyeshadow in the same blush shade.

Get the look: For a dramatic blush look, layer different formulas. Start by applying a cream blush or liquid stain to the apples of your cheeks, blending upwards along the cheekbone. Set the cream with a powder formula using a large fluffy blush, sweeping it along the cheekbones. For more intense pigment, use a light stippling motion, pressing the powder into your skin. For a monochromatic look, take a small blending brush and apply a wash of color to the eyelid using the same blush powder.

7. Pull-Through Braids

According to Pinterest, pull through braids are going to be THE summer hair trend! Searches on Pinterest have increased by 155%, which is insane yet completely understandable – they’re super cute, easy to achieve, and ideal for grocery-store glam!

8. Watercolor Eyeshadow

Watercolor eyeshadow first made an appearance back in 2019, however, it’s currently experiencing a major resurgence. Favored both on the runway and red carpet, it’s time for you to experiment with the trend at home – we swear, it’s not as difficult as it looks!

A post shared by Lisa Eldridge (@lisaeldridgemakeup) on

Get the look: Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to paint on color and be sure to blend out the edges for a softly diffused look that mimics a watercolor effect. Focus the brush wherever you want to add intensity like the outer edges and the crease. Don’t be afraid of working the color all the way up to the brow – the stained effect works well on larger areas, and as the color is less intense, it doesn’t look as bold. Repeat the process with different complementary shades – our Huda Beauty Pastel Obsessions Eyeshadow Palettes, $29, are perfect for this look. 9. Fox Eye Makeup

The fox eye makeup trend has taken over the beauty-sphere and is a favorite among supermodels like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. The look accentuates the outer corner of the eye while dramatizing the tear duct to create the illusion of an elongated fox eye – it completely transforms the eye!

Get the look: Celeb MUA Melanie Inglessis shared how to create the coveted liner look; “To elongate the eyes, start the line 1/2 way by your lash line and pull it out. Then from the pointy tip, come back just a little further than where the shape of your eye ends and use the liner in the inner corner to elongate it.” For more tips and makeup inspo, check out our fox eye guide here.

10. Floating Liner

If you’re looking to experiment with a new makeup look, the floating liner trend is perfect – it’s playful, edgy, and unconventional. Plus, when it comes to this trend, there really are no rules! Simply grab a liner and get creative.

Celebrity MUA, Katie Jane Hughes, who works with supermodels Ashley Graham and Hailey Bieber, refers to it as the “floating crease.” She told Refinery29, “It’s this graphic, Twiggy-like line between your lash line and brow.” Adding, “It’s different from a cut crease in the way that it’s graphic and simple, rather than heavily blended and layered.” Pair it with dramatic, fluttery lashes and you’re good to go (to your living room).

Get the look: When it comes to floating liner, the most important thing is, of course, the liner. Find a long-lasting formula because smudging or fading completely ruins this look! Our go-to is the Huda Beauty Life Liner Duo Pencil & Liquid Eyeliner, $25 – once you apply the liquid formula, it’s there to stay (for 48 hours!). For more deets on the trend, check out our floating liner look book and guide.
