There are some body issues that’ll send us running to the emergency room stat, while others we casually shrug off, or worse, try to self-diagnose… Seriously, guys, Google isn’t the same as a doctorate, neither is watching all 15 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. But just because a body issue isn’t deadly, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t understand it.

Understanding the changes and occurrences in your body is super important as it’s your body’s way of communicating what’s up. So, we called upon one of the world’s most highly respected nutritionists, Dr. Oz Garcia, who advises celebs like Naomi Campbell and Gwyneth Paltrow. He explained all the possible causes of those everyday annoyances, from headaches and bad breath to bloating and sweating!

1. Sweating

Dr. Garcia says not to sweat it, as “Sweating is a normal bodily function and is not necessarily an issue unless it is in excess. Sweating is the body’s natural cooling system and is also a method to help us excrete toxins. Unlike animals, we don’t pant. Therefore, sweating is a critical means of adapting to our environment.”

Quick remedies

Add ice: For an instant cool down, place an ice cube in a tea towel and then hold it to the nape of your neck (just below your hairline at the back of your neck). It’s a powerful pressure point, used frequently in Chinese herbal medicine to help regulate body temperature, and it can even boost your mood.

Natural remedy: Apple cider vinegar (our fave ingredient, find out why here) is an amazing natural antiperspirant and when ingested daily it’ll help balance your pH levels preventing you from sweating so severely. Make a drink first thing in the morning with a tablespoon of ACV, one teaspoon of organic honey, and a cup of warm water. Stir to combine and drink after a few minutes. ACV first thing in the morning also helps to boost your metabolism.

2. Bad breath

Dr. Garcia explains “Bad Breath can be caused by a number of things. Many times it can be triggered by poor digestion, a food intolerance, The H Pylori bacteria, poor dental hygiene or a dental infection. A sinus infection can also be responsible for bad breath.”

Quick and easy remedies…

Gargle salt water: Salt is an antibacterial so it’ll kill off nasty bacteria loitering in your mouth, plus it’ll also help to heal any cuts or ulcers.

Chew herbs: Just as there’s food that induces bad breath, Mother Nature also came through with some cures – so grab some fresh parsley or mint (their chlorophyll content can destroy odors) and start chewing.

Chew sugarless gum: This will increase the amount of saliva in your mouth and gradually reduce plaque buildup, which will also reduce your chances of getting tooth decay.

3. Bloating

via Giphy

“Bloating can be quite common. Some reasons for bloating can be constipation, poor food combining, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), candida or poor microbiome in the gut. Lactose intolerance or other food intolerance can trigger bloating. We also know that sex hormones before a woman’s menstrual cycle can alter and cause bloating,” explains Dr. Garcia.

Quick and easy remedies…

Drink apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar aids digestion as it helps balance bacteria in the gut, killing any nasty toxins. It also helps re-adjust the pH levels in the body, as the increased acidity allows your body to absorb more nutrients. Try mixing two tablespoons of ACV with one cup of hot water (or warm apple juice) and a tablespoon of honey.

Drink herbal tea: One of our fave detox teas is green tea with an added slice of lemon. Green tea is an amazing fat burner, and lemon will detoxify your stomach, rebalance pH levels, and aid general digestion.

Watch your fiber intake: Fiber is an essential part of any diet (it’s what makes you poop), so incorporating some fiber-rich foods into your meal will help aid digestion and bust the bloat.

4. Headaches

“Headaches can be caused by a number of things: tension in muscles around the head and neck, low levels of magnesium, dehydration, and stress. Additionally, lack of sleep can be a major contributor to migraines, as well as too much time staring at a computer or your smartphone,” explains Dr. Garcia.

Quick and easy remedies…

Drink up: Since dehydration is one of the most common causes of headaches, up your water intake and avoid dehydrators like alcohol or coffee. Remember, you should be aiming to drink around two liters of water a day.

Add magnesium into your diet: Magnesium supplements are commonly prescribed for migraines as they regulate blood pressure and improve nerve function. They’ll also improve your quality of sleep. If you don’t want to take a supplement, eat foods that are rich in magnesium, like almonds, avocado, and bananas.

5. Smelly Urine

Dr. Oz confirms that “Potent Urine color or scent can be caused by dehydration, medications or supplements. If you started a new medicine and supplement regimen, it’s a good idea to review the list of side effects, so you don’t get nervous from neon or odd colored urine. Additionally, high purine foods such as asparagus can cause the urine to have a potent odor.”

Quick and easy remedies…

Drink more water: As dehydration is the main cause of potent-smelling urine, make sure you’re drinking at least two liters of water a day. Alternatively, you could add a sachet of rehydration salts to your water, which you can grab from any local drugstore.
