5 Drugstore Skincare Products A Derm Swears By
If there’s one question we always ask a dermatologist, it’s: “what are your favorite drugstore products?” If a derm recommends a product, you know it’s legit! They’ve checked (and understood) the ingredients to guarantee it’s packed with effective ingredients, and they’ve trialed the formula to ensure it comes through. When you combine this level of expertise with drugstore prices, it’s a match made in beauty heaven. We spoke to dermatologist Lily Talakoub M.D., owner of Mclean Dermatology Skincare Center and dermtodoor.com and asked her our fave question. Here’re her top five drugstore products:
1. Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil, $11
Bioderma is queen of French drugstore brands (which are known for amazing formulas at seriously reasonable prices) so we cannot wait to try this shower oil. Dr. Talakoub told us the oil “is great for even the driest skin as it doesn’t lather and retains moisture on the skin.” The formula features Bioderma’s patented Barrier Skin Therapy, which prevents the binding of bacteria that causes irritation, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema. But, if you’re just looking for hella-smooth skin, then the formula contains lipid restoring agents that’ll provide 24 hours of hydration. In fact, after just one month of using the oil, it’s proven to increase moisture levels by 39%, which is insane!
2. Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser,$3
This product has a cult following with hundreds of review online claiming Pond’s Cold Cream is the “best product they’ve ever used,” one review even claimed it cleared up her acne. Dr. Talakoub’s personal take on the product is equally as positive: “It’s the best way to remove makeup or clean your skin if your skin is dry, or sensitive. It’s easy to use and it’ll leave your skin feeling hydrated.” Unlike other makeup removers, Pond’s Cold Cream is 50% moisturizer so it’ll work overtime to leave your skin feeling clean, soft and smooth.

3. Adapalene Differin Adapalene Prescription Strength Retinoid Gel 0.1%, $29
Everyone in the skincare community is obsessed with retinol, and for good reason – it helps minimize pores, fade scars and even smooth wrinkles. Until recently, you needed a prescription for strong retinol, but now it’s available at the drugstore (YAY!), and Dr. Talakoub says, “It’s amazing that it’s over the counter now!” Just make sure you introduce retinol into your regime slowly as it’s a potent active ingredient and could cause your skin to purge or get dry. Start using it two times a week for the first two weeks, then gradually increase use over the next month until you’re using it most nights. For more tips, read our ultimate retinol guide.
4. Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Makeup Remover & Cleanser, $7
Micellar water is another beauty-editor and derm fave, as well as one of our fave products! Dr. Talakoub claims that the Garnier Micellar Water is “the best eye makeup remover, particularly for sensitive skin and eyes.” But it won’t just remove makeup; the micelles in micellar water act as a magnet to attract dirt, and sebum, so it’ll lift impurities from the skin without stripping away natural oils like harsh chemicals and alcohol can. Trust us, trade-in your makeup wipes for micellar water and your skin will seriously thank you!
5. Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis Shampoo, $11
If you’re looking for a quick solution to dandruff, this shampoo should be top of your list. Dr. Talakoub claims it’s “the most effective shampoo for dry scalp or dandruff.” The medicated, extra strength shampoo is formulated with 1% selenium sulfide and is clinically proven to combat even the toughest dandruff. It’ll also lower oil production so your hair will remain grease-free for longer. To get the most out of this anti-dandruff shampoo, Dr. Talakoub says to “Apply on the scalp, let it sit for two minutes, and then rinse it off.”
