We’re big proponents of the self-check-in every once in a while. After all, you need to be happy first, before making others happy. And whether it’s a mental or physical check-in (or both), sometimes you just need to hit the reset button.
So we asked health guru Tracy Anderson about her best tips for staying positive and feeling amazing in your own skin. She’s the celeb trainer to stars like Nicole Richie, Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Alessandra Ambrosio, and her BFF Gwyneth Paltrow after all, but her self-love philosophies don’t end in the gym.

According to Anderson, “A change in seasons is also an opportunity for people to check in with themselves and their health after the winter, but one’s mindset should never be focused on one temporary goal,” she explains. So instead of quick fixes, Anderson suggests implementing consistent changes that will make you feel better overall. From eating different foods for increased energy, to simply moving your body for thirty minutes a day, a strategic plan is key for self-improvement.
All in, Trace! Head her advice below…
1. Move your body 5 to 7 times a week in a focused way
We hate to break it to you, but if you’re trying to really make strides when it comes to workout goals, you’re going to have to sweat for it. Anderson considers bike rides, paddle boarding and hiking daily activities, but not exercise. “A workout should be a focused, intense, 30 to 60 minutes where you are achieving, connecting and burning calories,” she says. 2. Eat more lean proteins and vegetables, while cutting back on carbs and sugar
Even though Anderson is seemingly superhuman, she’s not completely void of cravings. But when she reaches for a snack, she makes sure it’s a healthy one like an organic GoMacro Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bar, or Matt’s Munchies organic fruit snacks. “When you’re managing your weight the worst thing to do is grab gummy bears, chips, etc. when hanger strikes, but it’s also normal to crave sugar when you’re pushing yourself throughout the day, so you’re better off having a little piece of chocolate,” she explains. Another non-negotiable is water. Drinks lots of it (and often) to ward off the the urge to over-snack. As for Anderson’s other fridge favorites, she says she always has “organic eggs, high-quality low pasteurized cheese with no animal rennet, sour dough bread, broccoli, salsa, arugula, Earth Balance Butter, and Farmhouse Culture Dill Pickle Kraut Chips on hand, along with rosé and champagne,” duh.
3. Supplement your lifestyle
“Looking good should also be about feeling good and mental and physical health go hand in hand, says Anderson. “Learning to find inner mental and emotional balance, while also caring for the body through movement, healthy food, rest and recovery—and quality supplementation are all very important.” Anderson relies on MitoQ 5MGbecause it works at the cellular level to neutralize free radicals AKA the waste that the body produces. “MitoQ is a special form of CoQ10 – an antioxidant the body makes naturally makes – and it can act directly inside the mitochondria,” she says. “So it essentially supports the body from the inside out, to ensure cells are getting the energy they need to support the many actions the body performs every single day.”
4. Working out can be done anywhere, even on the go
“I love where we are with technology because it takes the guesswork out of working out,” she says. Fitness apps, DVDs, streaming services and live on-demand classes are everywhere these days and if you can even get a 2-week free trial to the TA Online Studio to work out with Anderson 1:1. (Well, sorta.) Another thing she relies on when traveling is always having a killer playlist on hand! Anyone can be motivated to work out with good music and her top jams are the moment are: “I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheehan and Justin Bieber, “Lo/Hi” by The Black Keys, “(Hey Why) Miss You Sometime” by Pink, “Saw Lightning” by Beck, and “Rescue Me” by One Republic.
5. Surround yourself with positive energy
“Have people around you that love you for you and remind you that you are freaking awesome when the rest of the world doesn’t see it.”
