Celebs Swear This Dope Trend Is The Best For Your Skin
Can you guess which controversial skincare trend we’re talking about? We’ll give you a hint – it’s derived from the same plant as marijuana… Yep, you guessed, it’s CBD. But, before you ask; CBD skincare will not get you high, it will, however, moisturize, heal and soothe your skin. It can even help combat breakouts, which is possibly why it’s all the beauty world can talk about right now… Go figure.
But hold up, when did cannabis switch from being Snoop’s fave accessory to the It-girl skincare product? Ever since its partial legalization in some US states and Canada, there have been hundreds of studies into the skincare powers of cannabis-derived compounds. CBD is the compound that celebs like Rihanna and Alessandra Ambrosio are currently obsessing over due to its skin soothing properties. For the full scoop, we spoke to Skincare Center and Founding partner and COO of CBD For Life, Julie Winter, and dermatologist Dr. Lily Talakoub of McLean Dermatology. They explained everything from where CBD skincare actually comes from, how it works, and of course, all of the best CBD skincare products…
Where exactly does CBD come from?
According to Dr. Talakoub “The Cannabis plant has many compounds, two of which are well known. Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most active ingredient which has brain-altering properties.” Aka the stuff that’ll make you feel wavy AF, and definitely do more to you than just give your skin a glow. Dr. Talakoub continues, “Cannabidiol (CBD) is the next compound which doesn’t have brain-altering properties, but does have some recently discovered health benefits and is now legal in the US. CBD and CBD oil is derived from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant, which is genetically modified to have higher levels of THC.” So, basically CBD comes from the hemp plant, and the only thing it’s gonna make you feel is how damn soft your skin has become.

How does CBD Skincare work?
Okay, so get ready for some science vocab… According to CBD For Life “The body naturally produces compounds that mimic the CBD molecule, and fit in the same neurological receptors providing relief. The mitochondria (what powers your skin cells) have CBD receptors while allowing the molecule to get behind the cell wall and really rejuvenate the skin.” Julie Winter adds “It’s being called the new “super beauty ingredient” and has been proven to synergize naturally with the body’s endocannabinoid system creating ideal overall health.”
What are the Benefits of CBD Skincare?
Julie Winter explains “The anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of CBD naturally aid in reducing the appearance of fine lines and help improve irritating skin conditions including acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.” Dr. Talakoub states that “CBD has been found to decrease pain and chronic inflammation, as well as many other natural health benefits including skin inflammation and acne.”
CBD skincare is also great at soothing dry skin, Julie Winter continues “Clinical research published in the journal of the Federation of American Studies for Experimental Biology shows that CBD is responsible for lipid production, which helps the body regulate dry skin and acne.”
According to Julie Winter, “Hair and nails can also seriously benefit from CBD products because it’s rich in fatty and amino acids. CBD and hemp oil stimulate and enhance the growth of hair through the scalp’s absorption of the main fatty acids [found in CBD and hemp], omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9.”
