Makeup Tips For Hazel Eyes: How To Make Them Pop

Hey stunna. If you’re the owner of hazel eyes, then you’ve landed in the right place. Today we’re dishing on one thing and one thing only: makeup for hazel eyes. We hit up a couple of celebrity makeup artists for some real talk on how to maximize makeup for your hazel eyes. You don’t have to follow it to a T (rules are meant to be broken, ya know?), but if your goal is to make your eyes pop every once in a while, this advice is Gucci.
The Best Color Eyeshadow for Hazel Eyes

As you prob already know, hazel eyes tend to shift between the prettiest shade of golden brown to ever-so-slightly green. This variance means you’ve got a lot of options when it comes to the best eyeshadow and makeup.
“While all shades of gold, purple, and even a subtle yellow will complement the color of light eyes, pink and fuchsia tones work beautifully to intensify the color. You’ll be amazed how your eyes can transform with just a simple stroke of color,” says Gina Brooke, a celeb makeup artist who’s worked with Madonna, Gwen Stefani, and Kim Kardashian. “I tend to sweep copper-colored tones with a splash of yellow onto hazel eyes to create the perfect smoke.”

“After applying eyeshadow, line your waterline with a black pencil – such as Pat McGrath Labs Permagel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in Xtreme Black, $25, to intensify the perimeters of the eyes,” says Brooke. “A brown shade of mascara with shimmery flecks is ideal for this particular look.”
Mary Wiles, a celebrity makeup artist who’s worked her magic on Anne Hathaway, Lili Reinhart, and Gal Gadot, agrees with Brooke on the purple and bronze eyeshadows for hazel eyes. To bring out green flecks, she also recommends emerald-colored eyeshadows.
“Using a complementary color, such as green, will make hazel eyes appear more hazel,” she says. “It depends on how much green or brown is in the eyes, so play around with shades to see which works for you.”
Wiles recommends applying Charlotte Tilbury’s Colour Chameleon eyeshadow pencil in Smokey Emerald, $27, which was literally made for hazel eyes (read the product description if you don’t believe us!). Apply, smudge it out with a brush or your fingers, and then apply a couple of thick coats of mascara. If you really want to amp up your green look, opt for a green smokey eye with the Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Emerald, $27.

Super Simple Makeup Looks for Hazel Eyes
If you want to go even simpler – AKA, not do a whole eye look – but still want to emphasize your hazel eyes, get strategic with your makeup.
“For a simple dash of color, I love using a purple liner through the lash line and blending it up and out,” says Wiles. “A khaki-colored eye pencil in the water line also brings out hazel eye color since it complements the brown flecks. Apply it looking down and make sure to use a soft pencil that doesn’t drag.”
Colored mascara is another simple option, she says. Follow the same color rules you do for the eyeshadow, only for mascara: purple, green, and browns with flecks of gold. You can apply them as you would regular mascara, or you can swipe on a sheer hint of color after your go-to black or brown.

Don’t Forget the Rest of Your Face!
Creating the perfect eye makeup for your hazel eyes is key to making them pop, but you can continue playing them up with the rest of your makeup.
“Using deep tones on the skin emphasizes bone structure and warms the skin to accentuate your hazel eyes,” says Brooke. “A great product to achieve warm glowing skin is Kosas Creamy Blush in Tropic Equinox, $43. The darker color works beautifully to accentuate cheekbones while the highlighter creates a sexy, golden glow at the high points of the face.”
Whether you want a dramatic or subtle lip, this “go warm” makeup for hazel eyes also applies to lipstick. For low-key vibes, try something like Morphe Cream Lipstick in Butterflies, $9, a soft peachy-pink. To amp it up, Wiles suggests a bright coral orange, like Milani’s Color Statement Lipstick in Orange-Gina, $6.
