Okay, so here’s the tea: Cardi B recently shared on an Instagram post, “My last 2 washes I [have] been boiling onions and using the water to wash my hair.” She says, “I used to do this 6 years ago when I started my healthy hair growth journey. It’s odorless, and I notice that it’s been giving a shine to my hair.” And from the picture, you can’t deny her hair looks ahhhmazing, so we looked into it, and the truth is, Cardi’s speaking some hard facts.
A 2018 study published in the Journal of Drug Delivery and Therapeutics showed that when onion was added to an all-natural shampoo, it provided more nutrients and better nourishment to hair follicles than other natural ingredients, promoted hair growth, and nourished dry strands. In fact, onions contain many compounds that are known to rescue dry, damaged hair. For example, onions contain flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Plus, flavonoids help widen blood vessels, thereby boosting healthy blood flow to the scalp. All of this for the cost of an onion? Sign us up.

How to Make an Onion Juice Hair Rinse
Boil 2-3 onions in a large pan of water. Bring to the boil, then allow them to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Allow time for the water to cool, remove the onions, and store the water in the fridge.
Once you’ve made your onion juice, use it as a pre-shampoo, then rinse out and shampoo and condition as usual. You can also use it to make a hair mask. Remember to always be cautious with DIY beauty recipes and do a patch test first.
3-Ingredient Onion Hair Mask
• 6 tbsp. onion juice
• 1 tbsp. raw honey
• 3 tsp. coconut oil
Mix the ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to dry hair and let it soak for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then shampoo and condition as normal. Do this once a week, and you’ll see results in no time.
