Selena Gomez Swears By This $1 Beauty Potion
While belting her heart out with James Corden during a Carpool Karaoke session, Selena told the world that she has a daily shot of ginger juice to kick start her day! Naturally, we had to check it out, and because we’ve always loved ginger for our skin, we had to see what it could do to our bodies too – a fast track to Selena’s glowing skin? Yes, please! This miracle ingredient comes from East Asia and is a flowering plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. It’s most commonly used as a spice, but as it contains 40 different compounds of antioxidants, fatty acids, and minerals, so we’re using it every way possible! Here’s a breakdown of how it’ll help you glow like Selena:
For acne: Ginger is a super powerful antiseptic so it’ll help get rid of any bacteria or toxins that are clogging your pores. It’s also incredible at generating new skin cells, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, and speeding up the recovery of acne scars. You’ll soon see a difference when you add it to your diet or use it for a DIY mask recipe (check out our recipe below). For an emergency pimple treatment, cut a slice of ginger and gently rub over your pimple for two minutes.
For hair: If your locks are lacking luster, ginger should be your go-to as it’ll help boost the health of your scalp (and fight dandruff), stimulate blood flow and help to boost hair follicle growth. We love using it in a DIY hair mask by mixing 1 tablespoon of grated fresh ginger with a tablespoon of Jojoba oil and massaging it onto our scalp and then washing it off 15 minutes later.
For skin: Ginger is a dope toner as it’s full of skin-correcting antioxidants that fight free radical damage, thereby protecting your skin and your complexion. You can make a toner by boiling half a cup of water and leaving a few slices of fresh ginger to marinade in the water. Leave it to cool in the fridge overnight and strain the water into a bottle to keep as a toner.
For your body: Chinese herbalists prescribe ginger tea to combat nausea, so if you’re pregnant, it’s a great natural remedy for soothing morning sickness. As ginger is an anti-inflammatory, it’s also great for relieving muscle pain or menstrual cramps when you drink it as a juice or as a tea. Plus, ginger is a great immune booster so it’ll help keep you healthy.
For weight loss: Ginger is an incredible fat burner as it helps boost your metabolism. The spice also makes you feel fuller, so you won’t feel like snacking all day (guilty)! We like to use it when we’re cooking, or you can drink a cup of ginger tea every morning with a little lemon to help flush out toxins and boost your metabolism.
Our favorite Ginger Mask:
For our favorite DIY mask, mix 2 tablespoons of grated ginger with 2 tablespoons of honey (an antibacterial), and a tablespoon of yogurt (a natural AHA). Apply it to clean skin and wash after 15 minutes with warm water.
