Celebs always have flawless skin, and it’s not just a coincidence – they have access to the best skincare and nutritionists in the world. But if there’s one thing that all celebrities and beauty editors have in common, it’s that they’ll never leave the house without their fav facial mist. It’s honestly the skincare secret to keeping your skin looking fresh AF when you’re on the go. In just a few spritzes, it’ll seriously hydrate, moisturize, and tone without moving your makeup an inch. All we’re saying is, if it’s good enough for the A-listers, then we’re totally on board!

Why you seriously need a facial mist

We know you probably think a facial mist is just an expensive waste of money in a fancy bottle, but we swear it’s not! Although facial mists have been around for a while, the new formulas are a real game-changer, with many containing essential oils, serums, and multivitamins. It’s undoubtedly the easiest way to get a quick glow when you’re on the move, and we’re obsessed. By regularly using a facial mist, you’ll be giving your skin a much-needed hit of hydration, which will strengthen your skin’s protective barrier. This helps your skin retain its natural collagen levels, leaving it looking soft, smooth, and radiant. It’s also great if you have oily or acne-prone skin, as it’ll mean your skin needs to produce less sebum. Sebum is the oily residue that blocks your pores, and production usually increases when your skin temperature rises or it’s dehydrated. But, if you combat the tuurnt temperature with a quick spray of your facial mist, you’ll look flawless all day long. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray actually contains patented Temperature Control Technology to lower the temperature of your makeup for longer-lasting makeup.

What should you be looking for?

Make sure your facial mist has a good base and contains a humectant (a hydrator that helps lock in moisture) like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and propylene glycol. Humectants are essential if you have dry skin as, without it, any moisture added will just evaporate from the skin’s surface, taking any other hydration along with it. So, make sure you stay clear of any mineral-based facial mists as these can actually dry out your skin. Instead, look for mists that contain natural botanicals, like rose or hibiscus oil which are super nourishing. We love the ingredients in Miranda Kerr’s skincare range, Kora Rose Mist, $21 and the Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir, $18 which Rosie Huntington Whitely swears by.

When to use a facial mist

You can use your facial mist pretty much whenever or when your skin feels like it needs a little extra moisture or it’s getting hot. Apply it before you moisturize as this will help your product to penetrate the skin more deeply rather than when it’s dry. You can also use your facial mist to freshen up throughout the day – at HBHQ we all have one on our desk! We love Mario Badescu’s Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater Facial Spray, $7. All you need to do is spray three pumps about 15cm away from your face at an upward angle and then let the mist fall to your face. This will help you achieve a more even application and will make sure it doesn’t ruin your makeup.

Our ultimate facial mist DIY

Start by grabbing a spray bottle and mixing equal parts coconut water and aloe Vera juice (you could also try rose water). Both these ingredients are literally bursting with vitamins as well as being crazy hydrating. To finish it off, add two drops of any essential oil that works for your skin (check out our guide to essential oils here). Our favorite is almond oil as it’ll give your skin a beautiful glow, plus it smells delicious too!
