On our 6-monthly trips to the salon – okay, we admit sometimes it’s longer – our stylist always ends with ‘see you in a few months’ – to which we always smile and nod. Realistically, our goal is to make that expensive haircut last us as long as possible – we know it’s naughty, but a girl’s gotta prioritize her money! Naturally, we’ve become pretty creative when it comes to dealing with our split ends, taming frizz, and just generally breathing new life into our hair without spending a dollar. Here’re three super simple hacks that will give you hella fresh locks for free.

Deal with split ends yourself

The idea of cutting your own hair seems daunting, but this foolproof hack for blasting split ends by yourself is super quick, safe, and easy. All you need is a pair of scissors and five minutes to spare. If you’re a bit weird like us, do this over a white surface for major satisfaction goals!

Mask once a week

We love nothing better than an evening spent masking and catching up on old episodes of Desperate Housewives. Like your face, your hair also needs regular TLC and fitting in a weekly (or even fortnightly) hair mask will make a big difference. Whether you need to treat greasy locks, boost growth or repair damaged hair, check out these easy DIYs you can whip up at home in minutes. If you’re super busy, scoop up a tablespoon of organic coconut oil and smother it on the ends of your hair, leave in for 20 minutes (or overnight if you can), and wash out with shampoo and conditioner.

Put on some good tunes or run a hot bath and follow these steps to get the most from your shampoo and conditioner. It’s really very simple: shampoo your roots only, and give yourself a head massage for a minute. Not only is this relaxing af, but a gentle massage will help stimulate your hair follicles and make sure your shampoo is thoroughly worked into your hair; cleaner hair means a cleaner scalp, and that means your hair follicles remain stronger. The same goes for your conditioner, but it’s the opposite. Apply your conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, and leave it in for as long as possible (prime time to shave your legs or do an all over body scrub). We try to leave our conditioner in for at least a few minutes, but if you have time to leave it in longer, it’ll give your hair a deeply hydrating boost, and you didn’t have to splurge on a deep conditioner! Never have your water too hot, as cooler temperatures are better for both your skin and hair. Try to avoid ringing out your hair with a towel, instead, gently squeeze it with your towel, or a microfiber towel if you have one. See some of our other hair washing tips, including  how often to wash your hair, here.

We also highly recommend using argan oil, or a hair oil. Rub a pea-sized amount of formula between your hands and smooth through the ends of your hair every day for stronger, nourished hair. Check out some of our fav hair oils here.
