If you thought the glossy hair from a L’oreal ad was just another well shot, well-lit production you’d kinda be right, but you can actually have that hair too! Our hair is constantly exposed to heat and styling products that don’t exactly nourish our hair, plus many of us are guilty of overwashing, which means we can strip it of its natural oils. But, don’t worry, there’s an easy solution to flawless hair – a hair oil. It will instantly make your hair look softer, shinier, and healthier, and if it’s regularly used, it can help with split ends and even boost growth – here we come, L’oreal ad!

So how does a hair oil work?

A hair oil basically works to replenish the hair follicles and will increase the natural tensile strength of your hair. The fatty acids within the oil will add a protective layer to your hair shaft, which is typically broken down by heat damage. This protective layer will also help safeguard your hair, especially in-between washes, from pollution, dirt and the ultraviolet rays of the sun. When you massage the oil into your scalp, you’ll also increase blood circulation. This not only helps to improve blood circulation to damaged hair follicles, but it can also help to reduce dandruff and stop your scalp from getting itchy – result! This means not only will your hair be way stronger, but because of it, you’ll have less breakage so it’ll look healthier and have killer shine. Different oils target different hair issues too: argan oil is amazing for dry hair, almond oil is best for treating dandruff, and coconut oil can help to boost hair growth. You can either buy the oil in its original form or get a hair oil that has a combination of healthy hair oils; our favorite is the Ouai Rose hair and body oil, $32 (read why here).

How should you apply a hair oil?

We would recommend keeping a hair oil with you when you’re on the go as it’s super light and can give your hair an instant health kick. It’s also amazing at keeping frizz and flyaways at check when you’re on the run. It can be applied to both wet and dry hair from the scalp to the ends of your hair. Rub four or five drops (a few will do for short hair) between your hands, and then gently run your fingers through your hair. You can also use your hair oil as a mask once a week by applying it to your scalp on wet, clean hair. Once you’ve massaged it into your scalp and all over your hair, wrap it in a warm towel. Then simply wash it off with shampoo an hour later or leave it overnight and wash it in the morning.
