Celebrating Iconic Beauty Rooted In Latinx Culture
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the most iconic beauty trends, rituals, and certified beauty moments that the Latinx community has blessed upon the world. After all, the month is dedicated to celebrating Hispanic and Latinx culture, which is one of the richest and most diverse cultures in the world, and what makes it so. damn. beautiful. From Amazonian miracle ingredients to curly haircare and Latina beauty icons like Frida and Selena, we could discuss Latinx beauty for days! Here are six beauty legends we love.
1. Our Forever Latina Beauty Icon: Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo is a true beauty icon! She was unapologetically herself and owned what made her unique. She also used beauty as a way of expressing herself – a woman after our own hearts! Plus, you literally cannot discuss the artist without thinking about her signature (now iconic) braids and flower crown combo, not to mention her powerful monobrow and red lip. What you may not know, was that she was deeply influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, which can be seen across her artwork and even via her beauty signatures, from her affiliation with braids to vibrant colors.
2. The Ultimate Latinx Skincare Ritual: Amazonian Clay Masks

One of our fave skincare rituals is a pore-busting clay mask and we can thank Amazon nature for that. While the topic of weekly masking is now uber-popular, the Latinx community has been creating their own DIY masks to amp up their glow game for hundreds of years. Amazonian clay masks are typically made from clay harvested from the banks of the Amazon River, which are then naturally baked by the sun. The clay boasts a wide array of skincare benefits, from brightening to reducing oil production. And it doesn’t stop there, as other Latinx communities have also turned to natural sources like volcanic ash to nix pores and detox their skin.
On the hunt for a new clay mask? We’re currently obsessed with Latinx brand, Brujita Skincare, and their Convention Facial Mask with Peppermint Hydrosol, $44, which contains volcanic ash.
3. The Hair: Natural Curls

People across Latin America have been serving us curly hair realness for centuries. While the natural hair movement is becoming increasingly popular (and rightly so), naturalistas have proudly welcomed and celebrated their bouncy curls for, well, ever. In fact, some of our go-to curl brands are founded by Latinx women, from Founder of Botánika Beauty, Ada Rojas, to Rizos Curls Founder, Julissa Prado. We’re also obsessed with Ceremonia, a clean haircare brand rooted in Latinx heritage. Check out this post for more incredible Latinx beauty brands we love.
4. The Beauty Industry Fave: The beautyblender

When you talk about cult beauty products that broke the beauty industry, the beautyblender is at the top of every list. We’ll be forever grateful to Latinx Founder, Rea Ann Silva, a Mexican, Portuguese, Spanish, and Irish makeup artist from Los Angeles who brought the perfectly bouncy sponge into our lives. Rea once revealed that the idea came to her on the set of the iconic TV show Girlfriends and has since helped millions of makeup lovers achieve the most flawless beat, us included! People’s makeup has been airbrushed and flawless every since!

5. The Staple Lip: Red Lipstick

One trend that a lot of people associate with a classic Latinx beauty look is a red lip. The origins of the iconic hue are nestled deep in Egyptian culture, but it’s also inextricably linked with Latinx beauties. Take Selena Quintanilla for example; when she wore THAT purple jumpsuit and her signature red lip, a beauty icon was born. The lipstick shade quickly became the symbol of Quintanilla, so much so it was included in a MAC makeup line that sold out in five hours. Another Latina icon who was known for her red lipstick was Frida Kahlo, and more recently Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who btw, uses the Huda Beauty Demi Matte Lipstick, $20, in the shade Gamechanger. Just saying!
6. The Cuban DIY Trend: Avocado Hair Masks

A DIY beauty trend that’s heavily rooted in Latinx culture is avocado hair masks. Latina celebs like Adriana Lima and Cardi B have all raved about using the superfood in their beauty routine and naturally, we followed suit. Turns out, Cuban men and women have incorporated the superfood into their beauty routine for hundreds of years to amp up their glow game and tend to their tresses.
In need of a recipe? Mash up one ripe avocado and mix it with two tablespoons of coconut oil. Add in one whisked egg, and if you’re looking to boost growth, add one teaspoon of Black Jamaican Castor Oil. Apply it to your hair and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with shampoo and conditioner. We also have to shout out Cardi B’s hair mask recipe, check it out here.
