This Stunning Eyeshadow Look Has Had A Fresh Makeover
Now that we’re wearing masks around the clock, eyes are becoming the focus. And, one iconic eyeshadow technique that’s perfect to play with RN is halo eyes, a look that’s created by using light or bright colors in the center of the eyelid, which is contrasted by darker shadow either side. While this look was hugely popular before the no-makeup makeup look started trending in the last couple of years, it’s since had a sexy, sophisticated makeover that’s actually super versatile and very wearable.
The halo eye popular a couple of years ago was meticulously carved out with a striking contrast, whereas 2020’s halo eye feels a lot more laid back, sultry, and easy to wear, and most importantly, a lot less challenging to achieve! So, from negative space halo looks to emerald, mermaid eyes, here are some of our favorite halo looks and our need-to-know tips for creating this fresh take on the halo look yourself.

While this eyeshadow look may seem complicated, it’s actually very simple once you know the basic rule… When you’re creating a halo eyeshadow, separate your eyelid into three sections, the inner corner, the center, and the outer corner. The two corners should add depth with a deeper shadow to accentuate the eye’s natural almond shape. Then, create a panel of light in the center of the lid with a brighter, contrasting eyeshadow. For extra glam, apply a metallic or shimmer formula on top in the center.

Once you have this rule locked down, you can experiment with different colors and textures, or alternately play with negative space or add a graphic liner for an eye-catching look. To keep the look modern and on-trend, avoid clean edges and heavy textures and opt for a smokey, sexy vibe. Always remember to blend outwards towards the tail of your brow to accentuate your eye shape.

How To Do a Halo Eye
Step 1: For a flawless final look, start by creating the contrasting shadow on the inner and outer corner of the lid. Taking a small fluffy brush, pack the shadow onto the outer corner, buffing the eyeshadow into your crease. For more drama, apply the deeper shade along your lower lash line as well.

Step 2: For the center of the eye – the halo – you want the pigment to pop, so pack the eyeshadow onto the lid with a flat brush using small tapping movements, then blend outwards for a less structured, blended finish. Finally, to play into the halo effect further, use a shimmer shadow on top to accentuate the light of the halo, then add a little shimmer directly below on your lower lash line.
Tip: We like to use a cream or liquid shimmer like the Huda Beauty Matte and Metal Liquid Eyeshadows, $25. These are actually perfect for creating this look, as you can use the matte formula for your corners and the shimmer shadow directly on the center of the lid.

Be adventurous and try a negative space halo eye (when the center of the lid is bare) like celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes. We love the graphic liner – it adds drama and snatches the eye.
