When we put so much effort into getting our eyeliner perfectly symmetrical (it’s quite literally a learning curve) we first need to make sure that we pick a style that flatters the shape of our eye. We’ve all been there, one second our feline flick is looking chic AF, fast forward two seconds and we’re a raccoon. But all jokes aside, the right eyeliner can make your eyes look, bigger and help lift the eye, while the wrong shape can make your eyes look smaller and even a little droopy! So, it’s worth spending the time to get it right!

We’ve broken down each eye shape so you can finally know what angles and shape work best for you.

Eyeliner for Almond Eyes

Eye Shape: This eye shape mirrors the shape of an almond: they’re almost symmetrical but they may have a slightly lifted outer corner on the bottom rim of the lower lid.

Celeb Inspo: Hailey Baldwin, Kerry Washington, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Kendall Jenner, Nicki Minaj.

Almond eyes

Best Eyeliner: If you have almond eyes, you’re lucky as most styles will suit you. Especially the classic cat eye. So, start by drawing a thin line on the inner corner of the upper lid and build the thickness as you get to the outer corner. A slightly raised wing will emphasize the natural uplift of your eye, so don’t be frightened to add some width out the outer corner for a more dramatic look.

Eyeliner for Round Eyes

Eye Shape: Round eyes are usually large and amazingly striking! This is because the length and width are equal and the white of the eye is often highly visible.

Celeb Inspo: Lily Collins,  Katy Perry, Michelle Obama, Lana Del Rey, Nicole Richie.

round-2

Best Eyeliner: To accentuate round eyes, you want to create the illusion of added width. Start by drawing focus to the outer corners. So, start your liner 1/3 of the way from the outer corner, bringing your line into a long, horizontal flick. For added drama, use a dark eyeshadow to ‘line’ the lower lash line 1/3 of the way into your eye and join it to the upper wing.

Eye Shape: Your eye shape could vary, but hooded lids are defined by the eyelid hiding some of your lid when your eyes are open.

Celeb Inspo: Emma Stone, Blake Lively, Lupita Nyongo’o, Jennifer Lawrence, Claudia Schiffer, Jennifer Anniston.

Hooded Eyes

Best Eyeliner: The aim of eyeliner for hooded lids is to open up your eye and draw focus to the outer corner. To do this, start by applying a white liner on the waterline of your lower lash line, which helps open up the eye. For your upper lid, focus on the outer corner, only tapering 1/3 or halfway into your eye with a thick, elongated vertical flick. If you want to apply eyeliner to your lower lash line, concentrate it at the outer corner only.

Eyeliner for Deep-Set Eyes

Eye Shape: Deep-set eyes have a prominent brow bone and the eyes are set slightly further back into your skull.

Celeb Inspo: Jessica Alba, Zoë Kravitz, Lily Aldridge, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Gigi Hadid.

deep-set-2

Best Eyeliner: For this shape, your eyeliner style is dependent on the size of your eyes. If you have small deep-set eyes, for your ‘everyday’ look it’s best to use a thin line with a horizontal flick, as close to your lash line as possible. For a more sultry evening look, accentuate the corners and the outer half of your eye. However, if you have large eyes, you’ll be able to add more width, especially with the outer corners, so you can go for a much bigger wing.

Eyeliner for Monolid Eyes

Eye Shape: If you have monolids, most of the eyelid is concealed.

Celeb Inspo: Lui Wen, Park Ji Hye, Sandra Oh, Lucy Liu.

Monolid Eyes

Best Eyeliner: A very dramatic liner look works well with monolids. So, use a soft kohl pencil to outline your upper lid, then smudge the pencil upwards to create a slightly smoky eye. For a more classic look, apply eyeliner from the tear duct, extending the wing outwards at an upward angle. Adjust the width of your liner depending on your mood– we think the thicker the better!

How To Apply Eyeliner Like A Pro:

Now that you know which eyeliner style is ‘the one,’ here are some tips to make it absolutely flawless:

  • Find the right liner: We find using a thin, pen styled liner allows you to build up the width gradually and create a more even wing, our favorite is the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. If your feline flick is often uneven, start with the outer corner of the wing and then work inwards towards your tear duct. Or, you could use the Quick Flick stamp for failsafe wings, simply adjust the angle of the stamp according to your ideal shape. If you’re a liner pro, the Huda Beauty Life Liner eyeliner will last 48 hours without smudging or budging, and it’s the blackest, mattest eyeliner we’ve ever tried!
  • Use a pencil: To open up your eye if you’ve gone for a glam look, use a white liner pencil on your lower waterline, which will immediately make your eyes look bigger. Use a black pencil liner on the waterline of your upper lashes to add depth to your look.
  • Use eyeshadow to adapt your look: For a smokey eye, use a heavily pigmented black eyeshadow with a thin brush and apply it like a liquid liner. Then blend the pigment upwards with a small dense brush. For a softer, sexy look, use a warm eyeshadow shade on your lower lash line and all over your upper lid. We love a deep pink for a feminine yet fierce touch.
  • Perfect the finishing touches: For a more defined wing, add a little highlighter underneath the flick, it’ll really make it pop. Also, don’t be afraid to use a cotton bud dipped in makeup remover to clean up any smudges.
