These 3 TikTok Hacks Are Making The Rounds & We’re Panicking
TikTok, an app that began as a simple lip-syncing platform has now evolved into everyone’s go-to directory for all kinds of life hacks — from fashion, beauty, cuisine, and the occasional random yet world-shattering hack that leaves you wondering whether your whole life has been a lie. However, like all other social media advice, TikTok consists of the good, the bad, and the questionable, which is why a lot of these tricks should be taken with a grain of salt. And we get it, monthly beauty maintenance can get hella expensive, and often DIY’ing is the next best thing. But when an at-home technique involves your skin, teeth, or any other fragile body parts, all we ask is that tread with caution, and these three TikTok hacks are examples:
1. Strong-Hold Hairspray as Setting Spray
As we all know, the hairspray hack is a legendary, generational one, spearheaded by the drag community for its face-beat-locking abilities back in the day when setting sprays hadn’t even been born. Fast forward to the present day, and we’re all a bit more clued up about the potential harm that the use of hairspray can do to our skin.
If you’re looking for a setting spray with literal, facebeat-freezing superpowers, we gotta give our Resting Boss Face Setting Spray, $33, a shoutout. It gives the ultimate matte finish with around-the-clock hold — not even sweat, tears, or a meltdown can shake this. We also love Urban Decay All Nighter, $33 — a classic with Temperature Control Technology to keep you and your snatched face cool, calm, and collected from day to night. A more budget-friendly alternative is Maybelline’s Lasting Fix Makeup Setting Spray, $10. It’s so lightweight that you barely even feel it as you spritz it on and best believe hours later, your makeup will look just as good as it did when you left the house.
2. DIY Microneedling
Recently, reality TV star Tilly Whitfield shared her experience of a DIY skin procedure gone wrong — a hack that she saw on Tik Tok a few months before she entered the Big Brother Australia house.

In her IG post above, she explains ‘this is the result of attempting to remove scarring [that] I inflicted on myself [while] trying to replicate an at-home beauty procedure [that] I saw on a Tik Tok video, two months before Big Brother. Who bloody else would manage to do such a thing.’ This resulted in broken skin and swelling that ‘caused temporary loss of vision’ after Tilly ‘literally shoved needles deep down’ into her skin. As most of us know, micro-needling with a derma roller is a well-known, collagen-inducing procedure that can provide amazing results for acne scarring, dark spots, stretch masks, and wrinkles when done right. As Tilly warns, sometimes it’s best for us to ‘leave it to the professionals.’ Here’s everything you need to know about dermarolling at home. Most importantly, never ever stick needles into your skin.
3. DIY Dental Care
There’s been a huge surge of dental hacks, from teeth whitening and even DIY dentures, that have left professionals with pounding headaches due to stress, and rightfully so. Last year, we saw Tik Tok users file down their teeth with literal nail files. Then, the trend of high-strength liquid hydrogen peroxide and baking powder erupted as a teeth-whitening hack with dentists warning of the damaging long-term effects. And now, at-home dentures are 2021’s newest DIY dental procedure where morph beads are used as prosthetic dental molds, a method that experts say can lead to severe gum damage in the long run, and obvs the dentistry industry is now freaking the eff out. But consider this…if dental care were more accessible and affordable for all, maybe, just maybe, people would not have to go to these extreme lengths to solve their dental troubles.
