The 90s Hair Trends Making A Huge Comeback This Year
While there are some 90s trends that we’re not welcoming back into our beauty repertoire – skinny brows? Thank you, next. There are others that we’re totally here for. Let’s be real, Cher (from Clueless, obvs) will forever be our style icon – her sass and her high pony are next level. But recently these hair trends have moved from our Netflix account onto the catwalk, our Instagram feed, and on pretty much all of the It-girl supermodels, from Kendall Jenner to Bella Hadid. Here are our fave 90s hair trends that we’ll be creating all year long.
1. Side ponies
Is there anything more 90s than a high side pony? A super-high snatched pony is SO on trend right now, but we like to style it with a 90s twist and wear our pony to the side like the Queen Bee herself.
Styling tip: For a more casual look, we love to wear our high pony with a scrunchie a la Hailey Baldwin, hold up, we mean Bieber. But for a more sophisticated look, take a section from your pony and wrap it around your hair tie, then secure it with a bobby pin. Flip your pony to one side, and you’ve got the look.
2. Banana Clips AKA Claw Clips
Ok so hear us out, we know these hair clips may remind you of your confused tween years when you wore cargo pants and a halter neck top, inspired by the coolest crew in town, the Spice Girls (obvs), but these clips are making a comeback. The claw clip is now edgy AF and is single-handedly being brought back into fashion by Bella Hadid. They even made it onto the catwalk at Alexander Wang. Plus, they’re perfect for next day bed hair that you don’t have time to wash. Find your perfect claw clip from Kit.sch, $12.
Styling tip: Section the front of your hair so that you have some hair falling around your face, then twist and clip. Finish with a pair of micro sunnies et voila, you’re an It-girl!
3. Scrunchies
We’ve been obsessed with scrunchies for as long as we can remember – not only are they super cute but they save you from hair tie-induced hair loss. Scrunchies, especially silk scrunchies (boujee, we know), cause less friction so are a lot better for your hair. We’re currently obsessed with the SLIP, Pure Silk Hair Scrunchie, $50 for three scrunchies.

4. Hair clips
Hair clips are the quickest and easiest way to update your look, well technically, give it that throwback vibe that we’re living for atm. Just grab a pack of hair clips from your local drugstore or online here, $7, and you’re good to go. Everyone’s wearing hair clips; from the classic snap clip to bedazzled bobby pins, just make sure they’re on show and taking center stage.
Styling tip: We love to straighten our hair, style a center parting, and clip in a snap clip on either side of our parting for some major 90s vibes. Celebrity hairstylist, Justine Marjan spilled her secrets to getting the look, “To apply, make sure hair is styled as you want before adding in the hair accessories. Use your hands to hold the hair down below the placement, so that they can easily slide in the hair without messing up the style. Use the facial features as a guide for placement, such as the eyebrow arch, edge of the eyebrow, eye, cheekbones, etc.”
5. Pigtails
As soon as we saw this cute AF 90s hairstyle on Kendall Jenner this week, we knew it was going to make a comeback. It’s just so adorable, yet it can still look modern and edgy with the right outfit. It’s kinda like a throwback twist, on the half-up-half-down look, and we’re totally feeling the switch up. Trust us; this trend is here to stay.
Styling tip: Part your hair in the middle using a comb. Take one section of your hair, from your parting to just above the ear, pulling it upwards in alignment with your cheekbone and secure with a hair tie. Do the same with the second section of your hair. By ‘snatching’ the hair at this angle you’ll enhance the natural contours of your face, making you look more chiseled. It’s the Kardashian signature styling tip!
