The Color Trend Making A Major Comeback This Summer
In case you haven’t heard, when it comes to (hot girl) summer 2021, we’re going IN with the beauty looks, from hair to makeup, and of course, nails. After a year of neutrals tones and no-makeup makeup, we’re ready to have some fun and experiment with color, and we’re not the only ones. In fact, the latest color family that’s currently making a comeback are summery citrus hues. From tangerine orange to lime green and lemon yellow, citrus hues are having a moment right now. And don’t get intimidated by the initial thought of slaying bright shades; there are so many cute ways to welcome citrus hues into your beauty repertoire. Here’s how…
How To Slay A Citrus Beat

There are literally SO many fun ways to play with citrus hues. Whether you opt for a bright burst of color a la Gigi Hadid or a neon liner moment like Justine Skye, a little pop of color will immediately make your look more vibrant and on-trend. If you need a new citrus liner, try Danessa Myrick Color Fix, $18; the color payoff is insane, and they last all day long.

Pro tip: To ensure your citrus hue really pops, apply a fair-toned concealer or white cream eyeshadow to your lid first. If you’re working with a neon shade, it’ll also ensure the pigment doesn’t stain your lid. When you apply your chosen citrus shade, make sure you pack on the eyeshadow using a dense brush, then lightly press the shadow onto your lid. This will help create more intense pigment payoff.

We’re obsessed with this green color infusion created by MUA Katie Jane Hughes. It demonstrates beautifully that you don’t need to limit yourself to one shade. By working with different green hues, she’s created a really striking look – one word: obsessed.

If you don’t have time for a full glam moment, take a cue from Yara Shahidi and opt for a soft wash of color. Again, we’d use a white base to ensure the color remains vibrant and then blend out the shadow for a polished, low-key look.

Another easy way to experiment with citrus hues is a tangy orange lip. It’s understated and chic without being overdone. To elevate the look one step further, keep it monochromatic and use an orange-toned blush like the NARS Blush in the shade Torrid, $30. This will allow you to welcome the trend with an elegant edge.

When it comes to choosing your perfect citrus hue, it’s all about the undertone. As with any color, the easiest way to make it work for you is by picking a shade with the same undertone as your skin tone (check out how to find your undertone here).

We instantly fell in love with this yellow sunset eye. If you have a warm undertone, rich orange tones and sunny yellows will look great. If you have cool undertones, look for icy lemon and lime hues or sharp tangerine shades.
