8 Fall Hair Trends You’re About to See Everywhere

Along with PSLs, sweater weather, and mugs emblazoned with cheesy sayings, there’s another tradition that comes along with fall: hair transformations. Something about a new season will always trigger the itch for change and a wardrobe update, and beauty looks seem like the natural place to start – at least for us.

Given the current situation of the world however, whisking into the salon armed with Insta inspiration isn’t as easy as it used to be. “With longer wait times to get into the salon due to social distancing measures, we will be seeing the return of sombré, solid colors and rooted hair colors again,” explains celebrity colorist and Redken brand ambassador Matt Rez.

As for haircuts and styles, low-key and grow-out friendly will reign supreme for fall 2020. Think shaggy layers, curtain bangs, and deep side parts that conceal roots in-between touch-ups.

Read on for eight trends that are about to blow up this fall, along with must-have at-home products you can rely on to maintain them.

Brondes and Sombre

Sombre, AKA soft ombre, and bronde are ideal for people who can’t make up their mind, pretty much. The love child of a brunette and blonde, Rez says that generally when you look at a bronde, elements of both will pop out harmoniously. “Depending on your base or starting color, bronde can read more one or the other, but Redken Color Extend Blondage Color Depositing Shampoo, $22.50, and Express Anti-Brass Mask is a purple shampoo and treatment pair for blonde clients. So if you have a bronde sombre, for example, you won’t need frequent visits to the salon but do need to keep brass at bay, this pairing is magical!”

Dimensional Brunettes

According to Rez, Dimensional Brunettes have ash and warm brown tones. “Ash browns have more of a matte reflect, and warm brunettes will have more of a gold, he explains. “The base color of the warm brunette will be more of a neutral brown with soft blended highlights that are gold in tone, and ash browns will have a neutral or ash reflect with highlights that are neutral to neutral-cool tone.” As for what to use at home to make your color last longer, he suggests Redken Extreme Length Leave-In Treatment With Biotin, $25, to majorly reduce breakage and the appearance of split ends, and add smoothness and shine.

Curtain Bangs

Whether you’re growing out a shorter bang or looking for a new look with a lot less commitment, give curtain bangs a try. “These longer bangs open up the face and are flattering on everyone,” says Nexxus stylist Emely Miranda. “Use Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam, $14, before blow-drying for a nice bounce and light hold or Nexxus Dry Shampoo to keep bangs looking fresh.”

Shaggy Layers

Celebrity stylist and co-founder of Trademark Beauty, Joseph Maine, predicts this fall, everyone’s going to really simplify hairstyles. “Cuts will be focused on long layers and blunt cuts that don’t require lots of maintenance and shaggy layered looks for the more fashion forward will offer style, without the need for constant upkeep,” he says. And if you’re frequenting the salon less, but still want a salon-worthy blowout at home, reach for One-Step Dryers like Easy Blo, $49, from Trademark Beauty. “I love this particular one because it’s over 20% lighter than others and 100 watts stronger.”

Deep Side Part

Who doesn’t love a good side part? Not only is it super sneaky to hide down-the-middle roots, but it’s chic AF. “We are creatures of habit so changing your part is an easy and fun way to switch up your look without committing to a new hair cut or hair color,” says Miranda. “Deep side parts are also super sexy and flirty! Use Baume Bois de Rose, $54, to get hair to a soft grit and finish with Nexxus Comb Thru Volume Finishing Mist, $14, to set the style.”

Ballerina Blonde

“For bleach tones that want a sprinkle of color, this precious pink is perfect, says colorist Karissa Schaudt at Maxine Salon in Chicago, IL. “After the hair is freshly bleached and lifted to a pure white, mix a clear toner with a dash of pink mixer to achieve this more translucent tone.” To keep your color thriving at home, it’s all about gloss, gloss, gloss. Try dpHUE Color Boosting Gloss + Deep Conditioning Treatment in Sheer, $35, or Manic Panic in Pretty Flamingo, $14.

Deep-Sea Black

Another shade Schaudt is loving for fall is jet black. “It’s smart to transition into this dramatic color during the cooler months, to prevent fading due to sun exposure in the warmer months,” she advises. “Deep Sea Black is so dark it has an underlying shade of blue. I would suggest depositing only with a demi or semi-permanent color line.” Try Manic Panic’s Raven semi-permanent cool black hair dye with blue undertones.

Spiced Gold

Maxine Salon’s color educator and balayage expert Rex Jimieson is partial to Cara’s color saying it’s a “mix of golden highlights and copper mid lights using your natural color as the background, or shifting your base subtly copper to really get that gold to pop.” Another plus to trying this look out this fall? It’s pretty low maintenance. “And easy to wear, because everyone’s natural hair lifts warm,” he adds.
