This Is THE Color Of 2022 (+ ALL The Inspo To Wear It)

Each and every year, Pantone picks a color of the year – they’re basically the Hèrmes of the color world (and the most reputable color curators in history). However, they don’t just pick a color at random, they delve deep into the fabric of the world, studying everything from politics to pop culture. Then, the masters at Pantone assess what humanity will be emotionally drawn to. Color theory is no joke y’all, it’s a science.

For example, in 2021 there were actually two colors of the year: a sunny yellow that was said to reflect the hopefulness and optimism that the pandemic would draw to a close, and a grey tone to reflect the darkness and monotony of living through a global pandemic.

For 2022, Pantone has chosen Veri Peri, explaining “As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the truster and beloved blue color family,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of The Pantone Color Institute. “Very Peri displays a joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

Leading trend forecasting company, WGSN, has already named “Digital Lavender” as their color of 2023, which is said to represent wellness and digital escapism… Hello NFTs! Research suggests that the color evokes calmness and serenity, which there’s no denying we all need right now.

In short: a purple haze is going to dominate the next two years, kinda like how Bottega Green or millennial pink infiltrated our lives. Everything from our skincare packaging and our NFT icons to our makeup looks will feature purple hues. In fact, Hailey Beiber, Lizzo, and Dua Lipa are already making a case for lilac makeup, and we’re not mad.

In fact, we’ve been loyal to a purple lid ever since we dropped our Matte and Metal Cream Eyeshadows, $25, which makes donning a purple lid super easy. All you do is apply three small dots of the purple-hued cream eyeshadow to your lid and blend it out with a blending brush, et voila! You’ve got a seriously on-trend purple lid in seconds. Feel free to add some shimmer a la Hailey Bieber, if your mood calls for it.

When it comes to slaying a purple anything in your beauty routine, the question to ask yourself is: does it make you feel good? If the answer is yes, do it! If a purple bejeweled eye makes you feel like a regal disco queen (Camila, we’re looking at ‘chu!) decorate your eyes on the regular with pastel tones of digital lavender.

Similarly, if a purple pastel wash through your hair puts a smile on your face every time you look in the mirror, do it. The running trend theme for 2022? If it sparks joy, however indulgent, DO IT!

One of our favorite things about Lizzo is when she commits to a #lewk or experiments with a trend, she pushes it to the max and has fun while doing so. Repeat after me: if it feels good, do it. If that means bleaching your brows purple, why TF not? We’re actually crushing over this entire look.

Another HUGE trend for 2022 is purple highlighter and blusher. It’s no secret that blush has made a comeback that would rival the world’s obsession with Y2k trends, and TBH we’re all for a rosy glow, but a purple-toned blush elevates the game.

Purple blusher radiates ethereal pixie vibes but it also feels like a nod to all the NFT icons in the metaverse, as the color doesn’t often exist naturally. True story: the color purple didn’t exist until 1856 when a chemist accidentally created it in his lab. Prior to that, there were only natural dyes derived from plants and animals.

Our fave purple blush? We’re obsessed with Fenty Beauty’s Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Blush in the shade Drama Cla$$, $22, we also love their purple-toned Killwatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo, $12; the two formulas layer beautifully to create the most stunning purple complexion.

If purple blush or brows feel a little adventurous, ease yourself in with a purple accent. Pop a touch of purple shimmer in the inner corner of your eye or along the brow bone and you’ll have a certified on-trend look.

We’ll get straight to the point: lilac locks are a high-maintenance hairstyle, but boy, is it worth it. Just imagine unraveling your micro towel to these icy digital lavender tresses. Before you take the plunge, read our hair coloring guide.

Purple box braids or twists are yet another way to inject some purple into your beauty look.

Could we do a trend feature without mentioning nail art? Definitely not. Nailscapes will be everywhere this year, so why not double down on two key trends and experiment with purple nail art. We’re obsessed with this 3D mani by celebrity nail artist @nailsbymei.

Okay, so now we’ve covered the basics and served some inspiration on how to slay purple makeup, hair, and nails, plus, a little background to the color theory, here’s some more inspo. Don’t say we don’t give you everything we’ve got…
