Booty Skincare Is A Thing, And This Is Why!
If it seems like there’s a beauty product for everything, it’s because there is. Skincare for your bum is a prime example of that – and NGL, we’re kinda here for it. This self-care category technically isn’t even fringe. It’s booming! There are entire brands – such as Bawdy Beauty, Truly Beauty, and Anese – that specialize in skincare for your derriere, and plenty of mainstream brands are getting in on the cheeky fun, too.
The Booty Care Boom
“Butt is the new face. It is an act of ultimate self-care. You do it for yourself, not for anyone else,” says Sylwia Wiesenberg, the very enthusiastic, passionate founder of Bawdy Beauty. “Years ago, I remember saying to people that whatever goes on my face also goes on my butt, and they literally rolled their eyes. I didn’t make this up as my daily skincare routine covers both my upper and bottom cheeks!”
She says that, until relatively recently, people were reluctant to even discuss or perform butt skincare. Women slapped whatever body moisturizer on their bodies and partially smeared some of it on their butt cheeks, and some of them avoided the area completely.
The rise of butt skincare – and the resulting acceptance of taking care of this skin like we do any other part of our body – was really a perfect storm scenario. Skincare and self-care in general is topping markets. Add to that a legit societal fascination with butts in general, social media – and even more body acceptance – and it all makes perfect sense.
Lynnsee van Gordon, the founder of Anese, says it’s about dang time. “There was always a need for products for areas like your booty or your boobs, but nobody was really focusing on it,” she says. “We want to make the conversation about booty skincare be a totally normal thing because it should be.”

Why Do We Need Skincare for Our Butts?
You might be thinking to yourself, “Why the heck do I need to perform skincare rituals on my butt?” That’s a great question, and there are some specific answers.
“Just like our face, the skin on our butts is prone to getting clogged pores, pimples, and discoloration,” explains Dr. Rodney Ife, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Eternal Dermatology + Aesthtics in Fulton, Maryland. “The fact that our clothing is constantly rubbing against the skin only makes matters worse. This friction can lead to dry, irritated, broken skin and bacterial skin infections.”
Perhaps because it’s considered taboo – or perhaps because it’s just out of sight/out of mind – Dr. Ife says that a major skincare issue is that this area is often ignored, forgotten, and otherwise neglected. That is, until an issue arises, and we go into “fix it” mode.
Common skincare issues our butts face includes acne-like bumps called folliculitis, keratosis pilaris (a buildup of dead skin that can lead to tiny bumps and a sandpapery texture), heat rashes, fungal infections, and contact dermatitis.
“These issues can be uncomfortable and even make us a little self-conscious. So, we should take some time to give our bums a little TLC, even if we don’t do it as much as our faces,” argues Dr. Ife. “Exfoliating, moisturizing, and making sure there is as little sweat and dirt as possible is usually enough. (And if these steps don’t work, it’s time to speak with your dermatologist.).”
